The cats raced through the Docks, watching and listening and sniffing their way around as they reported to Big Martin everything they noticed. Most found very little, for a great many people had fled the Docks for the outskirts of the city as soon as the Dragon had appeared. The few who remained had hidden within tough buildings and cellars, hoping to weather out the storm. Fires burned on some structures, but the occupants had been wise enough to escape them beforehand.
Some of the scouts, however, heard screams.
The Dragon's attack had come from above, roasting anyone caught out in the open at the time- which fortunately wasn't many. Some of those moving from one place to another, however, had been caught out of position, and trapped by the sudden flames. Now, the cats followed their frantic yells to the source, a large old building that looked like it might have been part of a factory- though it was hard to tell, as it was currently engulfed by a spectacular blaze.
In the car, Big Martin pressed on the accelerator, turning towards this new target. He was probably breaking the speed limit, but who was going to stop him? Besides, he couldn't afford to be slow with people's lives on the line. Although, thinking about it, he was having a hard time figuring out how he might help here- his cats were as vulnerable to flame as anyone else.
He glanced at Bloodbath, and cursed internally. The Bulwarks ought to be handling situations like this, not some poor kid desperate to help. However, such complaints would get him nowhere. Young or not, Bloodbath was a super, and Martin doubted that he'd react well to being held back for his own safety.
The cat king let out a long breath. "Large building coming up, and I think there's some people stuck inside. Alive, for now at least." They were getting close, he could already see the column of smoke rising from it. "Don't try to put out the fires, okay? You don't have enough blood in you for that, and you'll only end up pushing yourself too far and getting hurt." He kept his tone calm, not wanting to seem like he was lecturing. "If I were you, I'd form a shield, use your blood to form a barrier against the heat and smoke. That'd let you get in and out safely, and maybe take a few people with you. If you think you can manage it. As for the fire itself, I have a plan for that, but it'll take a while."
Bright orange light lit up the windshield as they came into view of the blaze. Without bothering to find a parking space, Big Martin slowed the car to a halt a safe distance away. "Just- whatever you do, try not to put yourself at too much risk. You just fought a fucking dragon, I think that's more than enough dancing with death for one day."
