Toko’s answer essentially boiled down to ‘don’t betray us first’. That was acceptable - if she betrayed them, there was no reason to expect they would not do the same - but it was not entirely what she was asking. Everyone had a price. High priority client or not, Azoth still had a less than infinite value to them. This was true of them to her - she already deemed the two Keepers to be quite valuable, but that was not an insurmountable worth. The simplest example was, if it was her life or theirs, she would chose to save her own. Painful or not, it was true. She had wanted to know where she placed in their minds. Where, if pushed, they would finally break.
But that was a difficult thing to place, and Azoth considered Toko’s answer worthwhile enough, even if it was on something she had not inquired to. She would have to bring up this contract he mentioned later, if he didn’t first. Kaz's was the explanation was of the same sort, but was an enlightening response (albeit a five word one) of its own. It was also in its own way surprising.
"Why would I treat you like a dog?" Azoth asked Kaz, giving him a look of genuine confusion. "You are a super too, aren't you? That puts us on equal footing - as greater than the common person. I would sooner consider the man who runs this city a dog than I would you. To do otherwise would not only be an insult to you but to my own pride as a super."
Azoth picked up her bishop. Neither of their questions were particularly difficult, and thus she lost no time in answering them. "In asking why I wish to accumulating money, power, and information, you've already stated my reason. I want to become more powerful. The 'how' I've already explained; in accumulating money and information, among other things, I can build towards accumulating my final goal of power." She placed the bishop towards the center of the board. "I have killed many people. I would like to give you a precise number, I don't bother keeping track. It's been too many for me to give you an accurate figure if I tried to recall. The most recent that I can remember include Mr. Holloway, an informant who tried to cross me, and two police officers who cornered me. I prefer not to if I can help it - it makes a larger mess and me a larger target, so to speak, but sometimes it cannot be helped. If it is the simplest solution, I will take it. The act itself is... surprisingly easy."
Azoth took a couple sips of her drink and a moment to wonder if there were any other instances of note and, finding none, figure her next question. "Why would you be willing to work with me? Is there any reason besides the monetary and material pay?"
