The sudden flood of negative emotions behind Sin Eater was surprising. It wasn't that she was unused to sensing that sort of thing, but normally it was a response to her own words rather than an unprovoked occurence out of the blue.
She paused on the stairs and turned around slowly, regarding Blue Jay with a curious expression. He seemed to be spacing out and shouting to himself. The sword had been thrown aside - an odd gesture, one that Sin Eater couldn't make heads or tails of. If he was going to have a nervous breakdown, this was some odd timing. Or could it be that his power gave him some sort of sensory ability, which happened to just now feed him some distressing information? For all Blue Jay's reputation led Sin Eater to classify him as yet another disposable brute, his power still apparently had some intricacies to it.
Sin Eater had already accomplished her purpose in coming down here to speak with Blue Jay, but her curiosity was enough to keep her from leaving just yet. She spoke down to him from the stairs.
"You know, I'd be happy to bear those emotions for you. All you have to do is ask."

Blue Jay stared blankly at Sin Eater and her lingering offer. She could do that? Given what she had explained about her power and what he had seen, he didn't have much reason to doubt her, but, did he want that?
His initial answer was yes, obviously. He wanted for the conflict to be gone and to return to a clear mind. He had things to do and he would need to sleep tonight, and neither was going to happen if he didn't calm down. The thought that he was so far failing at this necessary task only went to make things worse.
But he couldn't push this off on someone else. His problems were his. He'd promised himself that even if he found someone who could take them from him, he wouldn't.
But that was a lot easier to say when he wasn't a day away from death and the opportunity was before him. He didn't know what he wanted - or needed - to do.
"How can you offer that so lightly?" He asked in place of answering, his voice strained and accusatory.

Sin Eater let out a good-natured sigh and made a dismissive gesture. "Try to keep a little bit of perspective. I'm sure that your feelings feel like the most important thing in the universe right now, but in comparison to some of the emotions I've absorbed before, I'd rate them... Hm, let's say a 7 out of 10."
She tilted her head to the side. "Don't overestimate what I can do for you, though. As long as the knowledge that's causing you this distress is present in your mind, I can only keep suppressing the discomfort it causes as long as I'm present. There are limits even to my power.
"But even that much can be useful. You'll have to sort out your own issues by yourself eventually, but I can keep you at peak performance in the meantime. We're a team, after all, aren't we?"
In this case, it was less that Sin Eater wanted to help Blue Jay in his heroism and more that she was curious about just what was going on with him and his power. But they seemed to amount to the same thing, at the moment, and so she had made the offer. She just hoped that she wouldn't have to deal with the whole team trying to foist the discomfort from their petty dramas on her.

Blue Jay’s face flattened at Sin Eater’s dismissal. He didn’t care to hear her brag about emotions worse than this that she’d absorbed, and wanted less to hear her speak to him like a child about the matter. He chose not to comment.
Instead, he tried to think about if he really needed her help or not, but the image of his death and the thought that it was tomorrow kept him from concentrating. He felt a panic for what he should do with his time and his chances of getting more. Should he tell people? If someone insisted on coming and got killed as well, or worse, in his place, he wouldn’t be able to live with himself. And, the thought of facing goodbyes left a pit in his stomach.
He couldn’t concentrate like this. That’s what he needed, more than anything else; concentration. He had things to take care of still. He wasn’t sure if he wanted to accept help with any of this, for fear of harming someone else, but he didn’t know how long he was going to have to finish his duty, sleep, prepare to leave...
Reluctantly, he nodded. “I just need enough time to write a letter. I’ll… take it after that.”

That suited Sin Eater's purposes quite well. Even if she wasn't in the process of absorbing emotions, she could still discern them well enough. The general nature of this letter of his, if not its actual contents, would soon be known to her.
"In that case, I'll leave you to it. Just let me know once you want me to start using my power. I'll be in the common room."
She started to resume her climb up the stairs, but paused before she had made it another two steps.
"Oh, and Blue Jay? I've spent enough time around people staring impending death in the face to suspect that that's what you're doing right now. And if you're about to die, then that's just fine. Your problems will be over, you won't have any worries anymore. Just don't count on it. If you get all your affairs in order under the assumption that eternal rest awaits, you might wake up disappointed."
And then Sin Eater was gone. She decided to see what was on TV. True to her word, once Blue Jay let her know that he was done for the night, she'd give him several hours of peaceful rest. No matter what dark thoughts or nightmares plagued him, he wouldn't be able to find them unpleasant in the slightest.
