"Sir, are you going to buy anything?" "Well, obviously. Why else would I stick around?" Daniel was actually wondering how to best steal the necklaces he was eyeing but who needed to know that? His mom and sister really wanted any of these necklaces so he was going to get several, but he didn't have any money so the only way to get them today was steal them, and he didn't feel like waiting. Besides, stealing was actual fun, it always gave him a rush!
Really, stealing the necklaces was pathetically easy. There was only one shopkeeper and since she turned away to go through her storage he literally just had to grab as many necklaces as he wanted and walk away. At least that's what it looked like until someone just had to yell. He attempted to take off running, if only he wasn't surrounded. Now didn't this make his heart pound, it was so exciting! He put his hands up, smiling, "Aw, come on, won't anyone help a poor shoplifter?" He meant it, he didn't want this to end so soon!

James had been in the mood to try some of the local delicacies, see if he could perhaps use some of them in his own restaurant. Of course, there was no place better for finding hidden gems than the local market, even in the city. It was something he knew well, which was why he wasn't just concerning himself with finding new ingredients. He was taking in all the sights, smells, sounds; everything that the market had to offer, he wanted to be aware of it.
So when he heard a commotion nearby, James couldn't keep himself away if he were to try. It seemed that an attempted shoplifter had gotten himself cornered. With a good natured smile, the chef stepped towards the man and placed an arm around his shoulders. "My friend," he said lightly, "perhaps it would be best if you were to return the stolen merchandise. Or, maybe I can strike a bargain with the owner, buy your ill-gotten goods for you, if you would prefer."
He then smiled kindly at the young man before continuing. "Of course, we can't let a theft go unpunished. You'll have to repay the debt to me."

Daniel tensed up, ready to run from the guy coming towards him, but instead frowned when the guy called him "my friend" and put his am around his shoulders. Great, they probably sent this guy to peacefully end this and make the crazy shoplifter feel less threatened or something. That was literally no fun, seriously, he would have preferred if someone have tried to punch him out, at least there would have been a cool fight!
At the mention of returning the necklaces, Daniel actually started to laugh, "Oh come on! I took these 'cause I want them, you really think I'm going to put them back?" The other option, this guy bargaining with the shopkeeper was a way better option but the debt thing made that another bad option all over again. He never been in debt to anybody and he definitely didn't want to start now. Oh well, the debt can't be that bad, it was just one shoplifting incident! "Alright, you pay for it and I'll help you out or something but I won't be doing much, got it?"

James chuckled happily at the young man's words. It was always an interesting sort who tried to decide just how much they owed. It was apparent that the other man didn't realize just how much trouble he would have found himself in, but that was alright as far as James was concerned.
"Your payment," he said warmly as he led the young man back to the stall, "will be to accompany me while I'm shopping and converse with me. To start us off, how about we introduce ourselves? I am James, owner of a little restaurant not too far from here." Once the pair reached their destination, James pulled out his wallet and paid the amount due while apologizing for his new friends behavior. After a satisfied nod, he turned back to the young man. "So, who might you be, if I may ask?"

Daniel didn't really get how talking to this guy was paying off his debt. Whenever he heard of getting rid of your debt, you usually work for the person or something, but seriously, he wasn't complaining! No way, he never worked anywhere and he wasn't starting on the same day he got stuck with his first debt!
The guy have introduced themselves as James, pretty plain name if Daniel was concerned! Still, James was paying the shopkeeper whatever Daniel apparently have needed to pay, which in his opinion was not that much, he could have easily paid if he actually felt like it. The shopkeeper still was angry at him, judging by the glare so he waved at her, smiling, "Hey, drama queen, you're getting money right now so there's literally no need for the death glare, alright?" The glare actually intensified but that just made it funny and he was about to laugh before being asked his name. "I'm Daniel, and can we hurry so I can pay off this debt?"

James raised an eyebrow at Daniel's words. He was certainly an inpatient sort, not that he could be blamed for that. It was simply his nature, after all. Still, it posed a slight issue. What would the two of them discuss? Obviously anything that required real insight and concentration would not be a topic. So what would be something that could provoke a conversation worth having, without all of the deep thought of philosophy, he wondered.
He looked at the other man and smiled, as they walked along. "Tell me about your hobbies, Daniel. Preferably the legal ones," he laughed.

"Preferable the legal ones? But the illegal ones are the fun ones!" Daniel may have said this like he was joking but he really wasn't. Seriously, even the more legal hobbies have helped him do more illegal things! But those hobbies were probably what this guy wanted to hear so he'll just say those.
"Alright, I'll be more serious. My legal hobbies are playing the guitar and painting, plus, helping out my sister, she loves these necklaces but I didn't want pay so I just stole them. See how boring legal hobbies even sound!? That's why they don't stay legal, they just started legal!" The graffiti around the city and such definitely helped support the last part. "Besides, illegal stuff is way more fun when you got people who'll bail you out of jail or something!"

James nodded after Daniel gave his answer. He had no doubts that illegal activities were far more interesting to the young man, but that didn't mean that legal hobbies were pointless. There was a certain satisfaction in doing something well that genuinely helped other people. That was the reason why he had opened up his restaurant, after all.
"I was wondering why you would be stealing necklaces like that," he chuckled after a moment of thought. "Tell me about your sister. Does she, for instance, share your appetite for being on the wrong side of the law?"

Daniel narrowed his eyes as the guy asked about his sister, why the hell would he want to know about her? "Look, I'm not going to tell you everything about myself and definitely not my sister, all you need to know is not only does she do the same stuff as me, she gets away with it, she's really smart in that sort of way." The last part made him smile 'cause it was actually true, she once talked a police officer into letting her basically steal something just by being all pretty and cute!
He put on one of the necklaces, still smiling, "Besides I might just keep one necklace, I look good in anything so it just won't matter, you know?" This would probably count as changing the subject, Daniel didn't know, he never had to do it, but this guy just might get a hint that he wasn't going to say much about his sister. He didn't want people messing with his sister after all!

James chuckled at seeing Daniel's reaction. So the young man was overprotective of his sister? It was fine, he supposed. After all, it wasn't as though he was doing anything more than making small talk. If a subject was taboo, he could simply discuss something else. Although, he couldn't help but feel a twinge of pity at hearing that the girl was involved in the same sort of acts as Daniel.
Daniel's statement about looking good in anything was enough to warrant a raised eyebrow. "Anything?" He asked jokingly as he looked over a stall's selection of ceramic plates. "Just how much have you tested that?"

"I've tested it plenty! Seriously, some people call the stuff I wear "inappropriate"..." Daniel made air quotations at this sentence, "You know, pictures of pretty scary, gross things, or a lot of cursing, but I still make it all work. Plus, people freak out and that's really fun to watch!" It was actually surprising how over the top some people were just 'cause your shirt had a picture of literal guts on it!
Daniel picked up one of the ceramic plates, they were pretty but that was it, wasn't it? "These things are useless aren't they? They're pretty plates but come on, you can just normal plates and they'll do the exact same thing!" He certainly knew that thanks to his family, his parents loved ceramic plates but he and his sister just got a bunch of normal plates when they moved out and there's still no difference.

James laughed at Daniel's opinion on the plates. "You aren't wrong," he said, "but at the same time, appearances can be important." He was surprised the young man didn't have at least a decent uunderstanding of that, given his fashion sense. Presentation is key for a lot of things and can often influence a person's opinion on a given thing, be it for better or worse. A dish that tastes amazing but is presented poorly won't be as appealing as a decent dish that has an excellent appearance.
"Besides, dishes like these aren't intended for eating off of. They're more decorative than anything else." After a moment more, he sighed and took a step back away from the stand. "Sadly, none of these fit the theme of my restaurant. Sorry for wasting your time," he said apologetically to the owner before starting to walk away. "Tell me, Daniel. Is there anything here that you'd recommend that I see?"

"So these plates aren't supposed to actually use? Then that just makes them more useless, and the people who buy them even weirder." Daniel meant both those statements, though, maybe not everyone who got these were too weird, considering his parents were also in that group.
He wasn't expecting to be asked where to go and right now, had no place he would even recommend. But this guy's just a cook, right? He probably would like any sort of cooking stuff. "What I recommend? Since you got a restaurant, you probably would go to these stalls more to the left of here, they got a bunch of things, like stoves or something." Memorizing parts of this place was turning out to be useful at the moment, both to tell this guy where everything was, and when he himself came here to take some stuff!

James smiled at Daniel's statement. "They're no more useless than any other trinket used for decoration," he said. "The only difference is that they would look strange anywhere outside of a kitchen or restaurant. Furthermore, being pretty has merits of its own."
When Daniel recommended that they go look at stalls where cooking merchandise was sold, James looked at him out of the corner of his eye. He had been meaning to have the boy recommend something that he would've enjoyed spending time looking at, but if that was what was recommended, he would simply have to go along with it. "Lead the way, my good man," was all that was said on the matter.
