Blue Jay had not been expecting nerves when he set out this evening. It was pretty simple, really, what he was doing. Just going to talk with someone he’d fought on several occasions about ‘defaulting’ to her side, as he was sure plenty were going to describe it, abandoning his title of hero for… whatever the faction could be classified as. As that one blogger had put it, he’d finally snapped. Gone full rouge. Now, all that was left was to make it official. He’d figured he could probably just start calling himself Pandaemonium and no one would argue with him (as weird as that felt), but that felt kind of off. Also if he just showed up at the horde or a Pandaemonium fight and said ‘Hey I’m your ally now’, he had the feeling he’d either get laughed at or attacked. Probably both. Probably just due to the number of interactions he’d had with her, and the number of times she’d saved his butt, he wanted to inform her personally. And for some reason, the thought of doing so had made him really nervous. He’d stopped and wondered if he should think better twice - once as he was leaving the boarding house, and again as he was crossing out of the suburbs into the docks. After the second time he’d stopped and bought himself a coke, and gave himself some time on a rooftop to think it over one last time. He was sure; he’d been sure pretty much ever since he’d left the Bulwark. The uncertainties he was feeling now were just ones he’d already dismissed, given larger voices in the name of easy inactivity. He was done with that passivity. The mental pep talk made him feel better, and the coke slightly more awake. The good news was finding Aurora was easy (meaning he didn’t have time to try to raise another objection), and catching up wasn’t too hard either. He appeared a short ways away from her and gave a wide wave in an attempt to get her attention. “Aurora, can I talk with you for a second?” He trotted casually towards her (habitually trying to look as not in the mood for a fight as possible and stopping several feet away from her). And for a moment, Blue Jay saw the super by her title as Aurora, Leader of Pandaemonium. The image, not the person, and he visibly tensed. He almost felt like he was extremely underdressed. But that wasn’t who she was. He remembered the person, Aurora, the super he’d fought, and had even enjoyed fighting, and who he’d had several ideological conversations and one shouting match with, and who had patched him up and brought him home after he’d basically died. He didn’t want to talk to Leader Aurora; this was meant for Disco. Blue Jay exhaled, and his posture returned to one of someone greeting a friend. The look in his eyes, however, was serious, and his voice was lacking any of the irony the himself looking distantly at the situation the night prior had felt. “I’d like to join Pandaemonium.” Aurora Disicio

Compared to the last dragon, the aftermath of this one was quiet. The damage was localized downtown, with only some scattering of dust getting to the other parts of the city from the spores that were highest in the sky. The dust wasn't worth worrying about, and with all the damage being downtown, especially since a few notable buildings took the brunt of the damage, there was no doubt it would get cleaned up and rebuilt. That would happen even if Aurora herself didn't lift a finger. It felt weird to be taking a backseat to the restoration of the city, but in the end she had more important things to work on. Even if downtown was in worse shape overall, she wasn't done with the docks. There was always more work to be done if she wanted the docks to be as nice as the rest of the city.
Thus, she continued to work, often alone. The big stuff was already done: most of the buildings had been rebuilt with better materials, there wasn't much trash on the streets anymore, the plumbing worked now, the electricity wouldn't cut out constantly, the vermin were mostly taken care of, the water was much cleaner even if it still needed some work, the roads were nicely paved and widened, the internet was still a little shaky but that was a luxury and not something many people complained about. To the people that lived here this was already such a vast improvement that continuing to improve it didn't seem that important. But this was her territory, she wasn't feeling inclined to stop until it was up to her own standards. Thus, she was starting to work on some of the visual elements of the area. Right now, she was looking over one area in the center of the housing area that was just too unstable to build on anymore. It was stable enough to walk on, but putting heavy building materials on it might cause problems in the future. She was intending to convert it into a small park, and was taking measurements and writing down ideas for how to handle that when Blue Jay made his presence known.
In contrast to his attitude, Aurora's expression flattened. She didn't bother to turn towards him, viewing him more as a nuisance here to stop her work than anything. He couldn't possibly have anything about shrubs and flowers could he? He couldn't possibly have something against her drawing some bad pictures in a notebook could he? He couldn't even cite 'disturbing the peace' this time. The people living in the docks were used to her presence already, to the point that they were generally more worried about being recruited for manual labor than they were being attacked. There was literally no reason for him to bother her right now.
"What the hell do you want?"
The response made her pause and look up from her notes, looking at him like he just grew a second head. There was no way he was being serious was there? Given everything that happened since they met? Given the things he said? Was he making fun of her? Given her performance at the dragon and what she had to do in order to in order to get her current position, she wouldn't put it past the person that coined 'Disco.' Did he have ulterior motives? There wasn't much to be gained by being a spy, Pandaemonium wasn't exactly secretive. To sow discord? Turn people against each other? It was unlikely to work given his own position. They'd be more likely to beat the shit out of him than each other. I didn't make any sense.
"What?" she finally said. "I'm not sure if you've been living under a rock for the past month, but Pandaemonium is mine. What happened to me being being a selfish, short-sighted bully?"

Aurora’s reaction was almost exactly what he was expecting - it was that or her laughing at him - and so he remained looking straight at Aurora, trying to convey that this wasn’t a joke even though she had sounded like she thought it was one. Maybe it just made things worse, trying to be more serious than usual. He knew he wouldn’t take himself seriously in her position. Didn’t mean he wouldn’t try.
“It’s because you’re the leader that I want to join. Yeah, your goals can be kinda short sighted, and your tactics can result in harming people who can’t defend themselves against it.” He shifted uncomfortably on his feet. “I don’t know if you’ve heard this, but I’ve left the Bulwark. I’m sick of being a hero. All it is is a stupid title full of other people’s expectations, and I’m done trying to live up to standards I don’t want and constantly trying to work with people who say they’re acting in the name of justice when they’re either doing nothing or actually causing harm but who’ll happily jump on me if I make the slightest deviation from what they’ve deemed as ‘right’. I swear half of them are just taking out their own insecurities on what being a ‘hero’ is supposed to mean on me.”
He could go on for a while - he had the other night to Geata - but Aurora didn’t need to know the details and probably didn’t care to. She could probably just infer the rest.
“I need a new faction because I’m not going to get much meaningful done as a lone unaligned, and Pandaemonium under your goals fits mine better than anything else. I want to help make Emerald City a safe place for supers. I have no idea how to pull this off, but that’s no reason not to try. By helping you, I can help work towards that as well as my own goals. Whatever happens, I want to try to minimise the stress on uninvolved unpowereds as much as possible. I know that if we want to make any change, some people are going to be hurt, but I can at least try to lessen that blow, and the best place to do that from is as a part of the change.
“And, I think I can get behind you not just because of your goals, but as a person. There’s a lot I respect about you, you know.” He paused, breaking eye contact and rubbing the back of his head. “You’re determined. You’re not going to let things, even big things, get in your way. And, though you like to hide it under that glare of yours, you actually do care a lot about all of us supers. You’ve even looked out for me. I feel like you’ve got my back, Aurora, and that’s a hell of a lot more than I can say about just about anyone else in this city.”

Aurora's eyes remained narrowed, the suspicion still clear in her face. The fact that he went through a token effort to repeat what she said and then jumped right into compliments made her more suspicious. There was one thing that was making her think he might actually be serious, and that was that ultimately she would have his back no matter what and that there weren't a lot of people like that. She remembered him complaining about the Bulwark on multiple occasions. While it was possible that it was a con it seemed unlikely. It would have to be a very long con and she wasn't sure if he had something like that in him. Plus, the first time he mentioned it she had no intention of taking over Pandaemonium and even outright said that she disliked the faction as a whole. He'd have to be borderline psychic to have guessed the outcome until recently.
She rubbed her forehead and sighed. Aurora hadn't slept since the battle with the dragon, and while she hadn't been sleeping often for months now, this time she got the feeling she wouldn't even be able to sleep if she wanted to. Her habits from the past few months were starting to catch up with her. Now she had to deal with a constant headache on top of all the other metaphorical headaches she had to deal with, making it difficult to think sometimes. Even so she continued to push herself. She was unsatisfied with the progress she'd made since making Pandaemonium hers. It was still a huge mess, still couldn't be considered a united organization, and that didn't even include progress with making the docks nice, rebuilding its prosperity or even having a reliable source of income that didn't come from taking it from someone else. She returned to looking at her notes and the empty patch of land. With the irritation gone, there was only a hint of suspiciousness and a lot of tiredness in her voice.
"I'm not going to turn anyone that wants to be here away as long as they don't cause problems. A warning though. Pandaemonium hasn't changed much yet. Given your history, there's going to be a lot of people that are going to want to pick a fight with you. Or worse."

A grin spread over Blue Jay’s face, and his shoulders visibly lifted. That’d been easy. Way easier than he thought - he’d been considering preparing a ten-page essay on ‘the reasons why he was serious about joining Pandaemonium, and not kidding, seriously’, so he’d either have something to slap down for her or a reference for what he’d thought was going to be an inevitable long-winded ideological argument. By comparison, that might as well have been a welcoming with open arms. He’d happily take it.
“I’m aware of this. Kinda expecting it honestly.” Blue Jay chuckled, rubbing the back of his head. “Don’t worry though, I’m tough. Or at the very least, quite good at running.”
He was going to take this as an acceptance and was going to put it to use immediately. First order of Panda acceptance, he was going to take full advantage of the fact that the threat of an ally attacking an ally was much lower than a hero attacking a villain, and trotted towards Aurora. He was also going to take this as an invitation to come stand next to her, and cheerfully did just this.
His emotional gut still kinda hurt from when she’d given it a good kick in their last interaction, but it was the kind of pain he much prefered to address than let fester. Lacking a clever segway, he decided to be blunt.
He looked ahead (at unrepaired land, a curious sight out here actually), his arms crossed. His voice had dropped to be a decent bit quieter than before. “Hey, Aurora, are you still against us being friends?”

With that bit of oddness taken care of, Aurora looked back to her notes and continued her planning. She figured that'd be the end of it because there wasn't anything else to talk about, but she really should know better than to underestimate some of these peoples' ability to want to talk about the most inane things. Once it became clear to her that Blue Jay's footsteps were coming towards her rather than away, she looked up again, and stuck her arm out to prevent him from getting any closer than arm's distance to her. She didn't think he was going to attack her, but she still didn't want him in her personal space.
The question made her expression flatten again. She slowly lowered her arm, ready to bring it back up if he tried to move in closer again before rolling her eyes. The fact that this only came up right after she took over Pandaemonium made her suspicious. There were a number of people, both in the past and present, that very suddenly gained an interest in her the second it looked like she might be able to do something for them. Those same people tended to think that getting close to her was the easiest way to manipulate her into doing what they wanted. It wouldn't work anymore. Blue Jay's case was odd though. Aurora might have believed that this was what was going on if it weren't for that over the top stunt they pulled a little while ago. Blue Jay had nothing to lose by revealing his identity to her again, but Geata did. It left her at a loss as to what was going on exactly.
"Are you still hung up on that? What makes you think I would have any interest in befriending someone that's attacked me on multiple occasions? I let you into Pandaemonium, take that and shut up."

Blue Jay came to a stop an arms length away from Aurora (and did try once to take a step closer for talking’s sake, but after a denial would take the hint). He, in fact, had no shortage of things he wanted to talk with Aurora about, and wasn’t the slightest bit sorry about the fact. Of these, however, the point of friendship had been by far the most pressing, and so it was brought up first.
“Yes, I am still hung up on that. It’s important to me.” Blue Jay admitted adamantly. “You seem extremely opposed to this whole friend thing, which is weird because being friends with people is normal.” He crossed his arms and stared at the ground like he was trying to set it on fire. “Why are you so pointedly against being friends?” He wondered aloud - to make it clear that this was something he was going to question because it didn’t make senses - and began thinking over everything he knew about Aurora. There had to be an answer somewhere.
“Ah!” He recalled cheerfully. Aurora had indeed mentioned friends once before. Upon remembering a little more of the context, however, his elation faded quickly. As did the volume of his voice. Hesitantly, he asked, “Is it because of,” he gestured to his back.
The thought that he was probably stepping on something touchy crossed his mind, but he didn’t care. He was determined to figure this out.

Aurora took her now free hand (since it didn't need to be used to push Blue Jay anymore) and rubbed her forehead. It wasn't strange that she wasn't interested in being friends with him, though she supposed it would be from his perspective. If he thought for more than two seconds, she was sure he would realize he wasn't friends with every person on the planet and thus her actions would start to make more sense. If he was going down that line of questioning it needed to be stopped immediately. As stupid as it was, he would probably only shut up with a clear answer.
"No," she said slowly and clearly. "It has nothing to do with that. It's because I don't like you."

Blue Jay was taken aback. Both in the curtness of the response and the response itself; she was kidding, right? Probably not, Aurora didn’t seem to like anyone, and he had been a classifiable nuisance to her on several accounts.
There was his reactive response: “Why?!” with his arms gestured outward and his brow high and surprised to match, followed by a turn back to the rubble and a more thought out second: “Never mind, don’t answer that.” He waved dismissively. “I’m sure you’ve got lots of reasons why I’m not a likable person. But!” He turned back to her (the poor dirt was going to have pivot marks before long), looking determined. “That’s not what this is about! You’re not a very likeable person either, you know. You’re honestly kinda tough to deal with verbally. And physically. But I still want to be friends with you because I respect and appreciate your actions. After all you’ve done for me, I can’t rightfully deny that you’re my friend.” Shyly, he looked to the side and rubbed his cheek. “Also, you’re kinda fun to debate with.” He admitted.
Carefully crossing his arms again, he looked intently back at the rubble. He’d explained himself, but his main question was left unanswered. If only because he hadn’t anything else to say but felt the need to say something, he spoke what was on his mind. “What does it even take to be your friend, Aurora?”

Aurora sighed as she started compiling the words to explain to Blue Jay why he was so terrible to be around, only for him to decide he didn't really want to hear it. Good, she didn't really want to explain it. There was no point and it was way too much work for absolutely no reward. There might have been a few nuggets he could have used for self-improvement, but mostly she just disliked people that thought they were really funny when they weren't. It figured that he'd get defensive right after. Aurora's eyes rolled back into her head and she took a deep breath. This was another reason she didn't like him. Without looking up from her notes she shooed him with her free hand.
"Good! Then you can get the hell away from me and let me get back to what I was doing and avoid my unlikablness!"
Yet he didn't go away. Somehow she wasn't the least bit surprised given his terrible personality. Instead, he wanted to continue to interrogate her on basic things with obvious answers like she was some kind of exotic species that was difficult to understand as opposed to just human. It was something she was used to, and was something she was even more prepared to have to deal with given both the almost legend status her persona had.
"I have to like the person? This isn't hard, there just aren't very many people like that."

“Your point is moot.” He gestured dismissively again. “I’ve already said you’re my friend, which means I like you, which makes ‘avoiding your unlikableness’ a little silly, don’t you think?” But there wasn't much more he could add. Blue Jay sighed, ready to take the defeat. He guessed it was enough that he considered her a friend; the feeling didn’t necessarily have to be mutual, and he was going to go on acting like it was regardless of how she felt anyway. But something about Aurora’s answer struck him as unusual. A sly grin crept up Blue Jay’s face, and his hope was rekindled.
“You just have to like the person, huh? That’s vague, coming from you.” Blue Jay mused. “Say, you’ve got an answer for everything because you’ve thought about everything, right? So, what constitutes you liking a person?”

"How is it vague?" Aurora raised an eyebrow. "It answers the question completely, and there's nothing else to it. Not all things are complicated and require a lot of explanation."
Aurora sighed as he continued to interrogate her about friendship. At this point it was looking like her palm would be permanently stuck to her forehead by the time this conversation was over. She didn't understand why he was so fixated on this. There were plenty of other people that actually wanted to be around him from what she understood (granted, given how he talked about the Bulwark she might have been overestimating that number), so why did he insist on harassing her rather than being around the people that actually enjoyed his company? No amount of explanation about how she felt about friendship would change the fact that he was irritating, and nothing he said would make her more likely to want to be around him. He was wasting both of their time at this point, and she was getting close to not being willing to humor him anymore.
"Don't change your personality. It'd be transparent and creepy," Aurora side-eyed him before returning to her notes. "It varies heavily on the combination of traits in someone. I'm sure everyone has some traits that I like, but when combined with others it results in someone I don't like. In general, I like people that are confident, independent, and secure in themselves. I like people that can recognize actions, the intent and feelings behind them, and therefore don't need constant reassurance and compliments and don't feel the need to do the same to me. I prefer people that work hard, put a lot of effort into what they care about, and take those things seriously. Exactly what it is matters less to me, though I find people with similar interests to me to be easier to get along with. Honesty is important, and so is patience. People are complicated enough that it would take hours to go through every single detail, but that's the high level version of what I like in people. At this point I'd sooner punch your lights out to get you to shut up than I would explain the rest because you're feeling insecure about yourself."

“Why would I change who I am just to try to please you? That’s stupid. If you don’t like me that’s your problem.” Blue Jay mumbled, mostly in the admittance of his defeat. His final attempt had failed; this wasn’t going anywhere, and he didn’t have any other ways to get it moving. At least he could now rightfully say he tried.
He shrugged. “Well, whatever. I consider you a friend whether you like it and the accompanying benefits or not, and if you don’t agree, I guess that’s also your problem.” Jovially, he added, “Besides, I’m sure you’ll come around to the side of amity eventually.”
The last bit of the last thing she said was tuned out half because she kept saying things like that for a reason he still hadn’t fully figured out, half in favor of what had come prior. It was a better change in subject than he could’ve hoped to make himself, and he was not about to let this advantageous opportunity pass.
“And actually, that was another thing I wanted to ask you about.”
Blue Jay was aware that what he was going to ask of her was not, under the majority of circumstances, something that was to be taken seriously. This posed the issue that, in this case, he was indeed being entirely serious. He took a moment to graven his face and make certain his eye contact was sure.
“I need to ask you a favor. Can you please punch me?”
He probably could’ve picked a better setup. “I mean,” his eyes darted downwards, and it was with effort that he focused them again on her instead of the clouds or the buildings or the suddenly very interesting lot of rubble. “So,” he tried again, “after I got really beat up that night, and lived through it, and was better in… two weeks… I’ve begun to suspect that maybe I have some powers after all. Specifically healing powers. I’ve been wanting to try to figure out how to use them, but in order to do that, I need something to heal.”
Blue Jay embarrassedly rubbed the back of his neck. “I tried trying to kick my foot into something hard or something, but that… didn’t really work out. I asked Geata, but he, uh, turned me down. So, I thought, you punch hard and you seem to enjoy punching me, so you were the reasonable next person to ask.”

At this point Aurora was content to completely tune out his mutterings. They'd gone from annoying to outright pathetic. If she got this wounded every time someone said they didn't like her she'd never leave her room; it really should not have been that shocking of a revelation given their past interactions. Part of her wondered if he'd just leave with his ego bruised and his curiosity satisfied, but it didn't sound like that was happening.
Instead, he changed the subject again, and once again she felt the need to look at him like he grew a second head. This was going to be one of those days wasn't it? The explanation made everything make a little more sense. Aurora certainly did a lot of experimentation with her powers when she was trying to figure out how they worked, but this seemed silly and potentially dangerous. Normally she'd refuse, but after that conversation letting off a little steam and taking some of her frustration out on him sounded appealing. If he considered it helpful she wasn't going to argue this time.
"How hard?" she looked back down at her notes. "Are you looking for breaking bones, missing teeth, or just a bruise?" She paused for a moment. "Because of the extra durability granted by your sword I can't guarantee how accurate I'll be."

That had been… surprisingly easy. He’d expected some opposition, at least, but she’d just straight out agreed. He couldn’t lie, it was a little disconcerting, but in this case he guessed it worked out pretty well.
“I’d, uh, prefer not to lose any teeth.” He said tentatively. He’d already had to have a fake one put in after he’d lost his first in the dragon attack. That had not been fun to explain to the dentist, and even less so to Aunt Nora. “Maybe about as hard as that night you got shot?” He suggested. “Or a little harder, since I’m prepared for it this time.” He paused. “Then again, it took getting it the face with a stone wall to lose a tooth last time. I... think.” Honestly that whole part of the dragon fight was fuzzy. “And I’m pretty good at taking blunt damage so that I can weather falls and running into the sides of buildings and stuff.” He paused again, thinking. With a certain nod, he concluded, “Punch me as hard as you can. But maybe in the stomach. Just in case.”
Blue Jay turned towards her, clenched his jaw, and readied himself. The hard part now was to try not to flinch.
