As much as that whole incident with the newspaper using a stupid nickname for her instead of her real name was pissing her off, Aurora also saw an opportunity. One at least intended to mention her directly by name in the first paragraph. Another mentioned Pandaemonium, granted that spaz Bloodbath was the one that got mentioned. Aurora was still a little bitter about that and the fact that they actually got his name right and not hers. Regardless, that was some serious recognition. Between that and the fact that her power was really noticeable when used right, and that she had been using it as a calling card for everything she'd been involved in so far...well maybe people would recognize it now. Maybe people would recognize her now.
There was only one way to test it, and what better place than one of the most crowded places in the entire city? It was also the site of the heist that got her incorrectly mentioned in the newspaper as well. It was the perfect place to see how easily recognized she was, to see how notorious she had become. Rather than take her usual route, Aurora stuck to the ground this time taking the back allies to get to some of the more central buildings. Fortunately, they were deserted, as they tended to be, so Aurora was able to grab any loose trash, the dumpsters, gravel, and even parts of the ground to add to her aurora. The process of grabbing all this stuff was fairly loud, but no one was around to hear it. She kept her aurora heavily condensed so that no one would see it until the right time.
Soon, she found her way to the building she was looking for. It was only a couple of blocks away from the ransacked jewelry store, and the sun was at its highest point. Perfect. Aurora jumped off the ground and started spawning large objects under her feet to jump off of so she could get to the roof. Once she was there, she took a good look at the city below her. There were lots of people, more than she could ever hope to count. None of them noticed her yet, but hopefully that would change soon. She released her aurora, allowing it to fill the sky and shimmer in the sun. Shortly after she heard a few screams and sounds of panic. Her lips curled into a smug grin. They really did know who she was.
With a yawn, she dumped a cinder block, followed by a lawn chair she had been keeping in her aurora onto the roof. The back of the chair landed on the cinder block so it would lean forward, allowing Aurora to see the city below without having to strain herself. It was going to be a great show, and she didn't even have to do anything this time. She wondered how long it would take the cops to show up, or if any heroes would bother to show up this time. Just how dangerous was she considered?

Blue Jay actually came upon Aurora completely by happenstance. Here he’d been, minding his own civilian business, walking through downtown and supporting local businesses like a good citizen, when all of the sudden the sky clouded with those shining particles of pain. The people around him began screaming and running away, yelling things like “It’s Aurora! Run!” and “Oh no, she’s going to kill us!”. He even caught one instance of “Why of all times did Aurora Disco have to show up now?!”. It seemed her name was getting around.
So, like a good citizen, Blue Jay joined in the scattering, at least far enough so as to duck into a back ally. He’d been lucky in that he’d been coming back from class and had his outfit and sword just on him. Obviously he wasn’t about to completely change right there, but he traded his jacket for the one he commonly wore while supering, and slipped on his mask. He’d have to leave his bags here and hope no one had the time or mind to steal his glorified cloth sacks full of clothes, notebooks, and about five pencils more than he needed.
Blue Jay pulled his sword from its bag, slipped on the sheath strap, and was off. They’d be the only trace he was ever there, as a moment later he appeared atop the building adjacent to the ally and about half a block down from the other super. While he wasn’t sure what exactly Aurora was up to, the ominous cloud and the running crowd offered little to the argument of it being anything good. Yet, she wasn’t actually attacking anyone. She was just kind of sitting there, grinning. Threateningly.
Well, he may as well go over there before a swarm of angry particles began attacking the poor people just trying to enjoy their afternoon. Blue Jay ran to the edge of his current roof and on the last step before the roof gave way to sky, teleported. His destination was Aurora’s roof, and he landed with a soft step on its nearest corner.
“Didn’t think I’d run into you again here. I thought you’d already proven to Colorful Stardust Jewelers that you were the superior colorful stardust.” Blue Jay joked. Arms crossed, he walked slowly towards her. He’d still yet to draw his sword. “I don’t suppose you’re just here for the good sunbathing spot?”

A flash of movement caught her eye about half a block away. The figure wasn't there for very long, but it was familiar enough that she recognized it immediately. It seemed as though a certain birdy just couldn't leave her alone. When he arrived on her rooftop, just just yawned and materialized a soda from her aurora. As much as she was normally itching for a fight, she just wasn't in the mood right now. Right now, she just wanted to appreciate the small things, like causing a mass panic by merely existing. It was great.
"As if there was any doubt that I was the better one, but I digress. That is exactly why I'm here. It's amazing what a little bit of symbol and name recognition can do." Aurora stretched and leaned back in her folding lawn chair. "So what brings you here? Are you going to tell me it's a crime to exist now?"
It certainly felt like it was sometimes, but she doubted she'd get that kind of reaction from another super. She didn't blame the people for being afraid of her despite not doing anything this time, hell she reveled in it, but she still found the entire situation amusing if not a little depressing. During her time in Pandaemonium, not once had she even harmed a civilian, let alone killed one. She didn't mind the bad press though. She wasn't looking to be liked. It was amazing what a little bit of destruction coupled with some rumors could do for someone's reputation.

Blue Jay had expected to be attacked right off the bat, but, to his surprise, Aurora made no such move. The only thing she threw at him was a reply, and it was even less self-important than usual.
That worked for him. Blue Jay shrugged. “Happened to be in the area and noticed the screaming crowd.” He settled perhaps ten feet away from Aurora, far enough that there was still some space between the person he’d fought on three separate occasions and him, but close enough he didn’t have to speak too loudly to be heard. He crouched on the edge of the building. Sitting would’ve been more comfortable (even more so if he had a chair like the one Aurora had set up; propped up, even), but he wanted to be able to react quickly if she did decide he was worth attacking. “‘A crime to exist’, though? I didn’t think you were that pessimistic.” He chuckled. It was one of those lines thrown around on the internet or in hate-fueled speeches, and though he was sure all supers were aware that that was actually a thing that went through some people's heads, he'd rarely heard another super reference the remark. He was surprised to hear Aurora mention it.
People were still scattering on the street below. Those making their escape now were mostly those on the upper floors of the surrounding buildings, who had stairs, doorways, people to push out of the way before they could make it outside. In one storefront, one man didn’t even bother with the bottleneck of a door. He simply threw a metal mannequin through the window and hopped out.
“It is impressive, I’ll give you that, but there's this thing called ‘disturbing the peace’ that I’m pretty sure this falls squarely into.” But that was hardly an excuse for him to engage in any kind of combat. Smashing up buildings wasn’t exactly good for preserving the peace either. He looked away from the street to glance at the super. “You, uh, do know that showing off like this is going to draw the police right to you, right?”

"Please, it was a joke," Aurora rolled her eyes. "If you're taking it like that then you're the one with the problem."
Aurora cracked open her soda and started sipping it casually. The chaos in the streets below was getting absurd, which was immensely satisfying. Blue Jay's presence was much the same. Unlike her, who really wasn't particularly bothered that he was here, he was clearly getting ready for a fight. Afraid may be the wrong word, but there were obvious signs of wariness. He wouldn't sit and relax, he clearly had his guard up, and while she wasn't sure if he meant to, he was threatening her in the most round about way possible. Given what was happening with all the unpowered people in the streets below, he probably wanted her to go away, yet didn't have the confidence to actually make her go away. Getting that kind of reaction out of another super was even more satisfying than starting that panic.
"Indeed, I'm timing them," she shrugged. "I'm betting it'll take another minute for them to get here, and then another...ten minutes or so to scale the building and get into position to actually do anything to me, if only because I doubt they'd try a helicopter again after what happened last time," she took another sip of her drink. "Then we'll go through the usual song and dance where they pretend to be threatening, I tell them to fuck off and remind them of how they can't do anything to me and I could turn them into smears on the pavement without much thought, blah blah blah. It's so predictable it's almost getting boring. I doubt they'll react any better to you being here. I'm not going to start anything, so you can always just fly away and avoid the trouble."

“It already looks like you’ve started something.” Blue Jay teased. “Loss of business, damage caused in a panic, psychiatric bills…” He shook his head. “And what about a helicopter?” He couldn’t help but laugh, thinking about the police attempting to use a helicopter against someone who had such dominance over the airspace. Blue Jay could say from experience that flying through Aurora’s cloud was not a pleasant activity, but one would hope people as supposedly trained as the police would be able to tell that without having to test it out once.
But if she was trying to aggravate the police, perhaps it was best he left. Try as he might to be helpful and tell the public at large he was only trying to be helpful, the destruction he’d inadvertently caused in his past couple of battles spoke louder to the people than his own words could. Being seen with Aurora would not help his standing. At the same time, he had a couple reasons to stick around. For one, though he’d come to not fear the safety of civilians too much around Aurora, he did fear the property value of the surrounding structures. He’d prefer if no buildings met their untimely end today. Also, he was bored. “Nah, I think I’ll stay.” He said simply, stretching his arms above his head.
With his mind on the newspaper, Blue Jay had an idea. Perhaps rather than being detrimental to his public appearance he could turn this into an opportunity to push it in a way he wanted. “But if I’m sticking around, there’s no need to do the same ‘predictable’ thing for the nth time. What’dya say I help you do something less boring?” He stood up and pivoted on his heel to face the other super. “Want to put on a mock battle for the police?”

"A little bit of mass panic isn't going to kill anyone," Aurora rolled her eyes.
She took a few more sips of her drink as Blue Jay made a proposition. As he continued talking, all the goodwill and signs of her good mood, from the combination of beating the shit out of Dullahan and the fact that her name meant something now, slowly disappeared. All that was left was an irritated looking scowl. Aurora squeezed the can her drink was in just a little bit too tightly and it started to cave in on itself. Not enough to make any liquid start seeping out of it or come pouring out the top though.
"If you want to fight me then fight me. I don't lie, I don't pretend, and I don't do anything half way. You want me out of here? You want to protect your squeaky clean reputation of an insane vigilante that destroys more buildings than he does supervillains? Sure, whatever, but I'm sure as hell not going to help you do it. Especially not when I'm actually trying to relax for once in my life. If you want to attack me that much just do it," Aurora spread her arms. "You did, after all, come find me for the heinous crimes of cleaning up all the trash around the city and sitting on a roof. I clearly can't get away with that."

“Ouch.” Blue Jay said, actually surprised by the harshness of her response. “Here I am, offering to help you with your boredom, and you start glaring at me and calling me all these rude names.” He crossed his arms and shook his head. “This is why people don’t like you, Aurora. Wouldn’t kill you to accept someone’s good will for once.” He said jokingly. He knew he was being rather harsh in his teasing, but it was only because he was actually somewhat insulted. It was true he was still working on his super-stopping and not breaking stuff skills, but insane vigilante? It wasn’t his fault his powers weren’t well suited for general crime stopping.
Maybe he was just a little sensitive on the subject. It also wasn’t her fault he wasn't doing his job as well as he should be. Well, it sort of was, but he still shouldn't take it out on her.
It was becoming pretty clear Aurora wasn’t here for a fight, but if not that, then what? It seemed unusual for someone to just come scare a crowd of people and get the police called on them just for the heck of it, but then again, Aurora wasn’t your usual person.

"Oh? Did I strike a nerve?" she raised her eyebrows and smirked. "I make a point of keeping up-to-date on everything super related. When I'm talking about your reputation you must know that I'm not necessarily talking about what I personally think. Rather, I'm talking about what they," she motioned towards the chaos in the street, "think. The people you're trying so hard to 'save.' You must have heard it too. 'Responsible for the destruction,' 'crazy guy with a sword,' 'no sense of restraint,' 'constantly filling my shop and the streets with broken glass,' I could go on, but I doubt I'm telling you anything you don't already no. You say no one like me, but from what I've heard, no one seems to like you any better than they like me. I bet you could pull a pretty big crowd of people running away and screaming if you tried too."
Aurora took another sip of her drink. It was a good thing she brought it even though she wasn't expecting to have to talk this much. Talking could be thirsty work.
"Oh, and I didn't say I was bored," her expression flattened. "I said the police were boring. There's a distinction. Watching the people scatter down there is actually quite entertaining."

“You make a really good angry civilian.” Blue Jay laughed, the small bit of tension previously in his voice evaporating. This was a sort of indirect apologizing for jumping to conclusions, even though it was probably too subtle to be taken as such.
“You’re probably right, I bet if I did just wave my blade around a bit I could scare a good crowd of people.” He sighed. “That sounds like some kind of accomplishment, but, I don’t know. It’s hard to read the newspaper the day after you’ve limped home from a fight to find people complaining about how you’ve messed up their front display.” He turned around and gazed down at the few people left in the square, and wondered how much of the overturned tables and shattered storefronts would be blamed on Aurora. “I knew I wasn’t going to be thanked when I started doing this, but I’d like to leave some kind of legacy that isn’t ‘was only good at causing more trouble than he stopped’. But maybe that’s just the American Dream talking; ‘leave your mark’ all that.” He paced slowly back to the edge of the roof. Crouching down again, he could see over the edge of the rail’s ledge without having to lean or crane his neck, and could feel the breeze trailing up the face of the building. “Yet another lie from the people that own the newspapers and fund the history books.” He mused.
Blue Jay felt became aware that’d he’d been talking quite a bit, yet he still wasn’t completely done. There was still something bothering him. “So, now I’m curious - are you only here to watch people scatter like little ants or something and to bug the police because you can and this is some kind of hobby for you, or is there some other, more focused motivation behind this?” He asked, looking over his shoulder at Aurora. “I’m half expecting you to stand up any moment here and start cackling evilly before railing off on how we’ve all fallen into your dastardly trap.”

Aurora's expression remained flat. He was trying really hard to sound all philosophical, but was failing terribly at it. She wasn't even convinced that he knew what he was talking about or what he was trying to say. Not unexpected for someone that probably didn't even know why he was fighting or what he wanted to accomplish. 'Good' was such a vague term, it had virtually no meaning. It was so influenced by people that would just abuse the definition that she had little patience for it.
"You're lying," Aurora said flatly. "I think you're lying to yourself and not me, so I won't take it too personally, but the bitterness in your voice is palpable. You thought you could change their minds didn't you? Convince the unpowered that supers aren't so bad?" she chuckled lightly. "Saying that no one likes me always seems to be your go to insult, as if I actually care. It's on your mind a lot isn't it? Being liked, being accepted, being the kind of person people want to be around? You're also new at all this aren't you? Let me make one thing clear to you then: they will never love you. They will never like you. They will never find you even somewhat tolerable. I think all of us realize this after awhile. The smart ones realize there's little that can be done about it, the dumb ones continue blaming the behavior of other people. They might want you around when people like me hit their stores, or when dragons attack the city, but once all that's said and done and things are peaceful again they'll go right back to wanting you dead."
She took another sip of her drink, her expression still flat as though she had just stated the obvious. There was little emotion behind it. The revelation surprised her when she was young too. Aurora had the feeling that he knew this on some level though, and that he just hadn't accepted it yet. He seemed to care enough about being a 'good person' that it probably wouldn't affect his behavior much in the short term, so whether or not he could accept it was of little concern of her.
Aurora took another sip of her drink to his question. She felt like she already answered this, but he was clearly too dumb to understand. Admittedly, the fact that the rest of Pandaemonium would be able to move with less police and hero intervention was a nice bonus, but she didn't need to talk about that. She was content to ignore the fact that he was comparing her to a comic book supervillain.
"Little of column A, little of column B. I wanted to see what kind of response I would get, and to see if my name meant anything yet."

Something about how she attempted to explain him didn’t quite feel accurate. Attempting to achieve a positive public appearance had just seemed like a natural step, but he felt like he’d jumped to this conclusion without checking with his subconscious self on how they’d gotten there. For nearly half a minute he was silent, attempting to put his thoughts together. “They won’t ever like any of us, will they?” He sighed. “Yeah, on some level I care about what people think of me - I feel like that’s a pretty normal thing to worry about - but it’s more like my reputation is a side effect of my work. It’s a way to gauge how successful I am. Getting just one thanks in a world that hates you means you’ve done a whole lot of good, right? It does suck when I get blamed for things I didn’t do, or when people blow up my mistakes or ignore my successes, but it’s the kind of annoyance that can be forgotten with a soda and a good night of sleep.”
He paused to find his point. “I don’t want to be a hero or whatever because I want people to like me. I don’t care about that. I want to have a good reputation - or, really, I want to help people because then I won’t feel like I’ve wasted my life.” He said in honest admittal. He was admitting a lot of stuff recently - it seemed he wasn’t all that good at keeping these things to himself.
“But you probably think that sounds silly.” He chuckled. “I bet you’ve found twenty holes to poke in my argument by now. But, I ask in rebuttal, how’s going with the grain of public opinion going for you?” Absently, he looked up at the sky. The bright light of Aurora’s cloud made him immediately regret it. “So now it’s my turn to make wild guesses at your life goals and motivations.” He said teasingly, rubbing his eye. “You seemed there like you were speaking from personal experience. If it’s smart to accept we can’t change the public’s mind, that’s what you’ve done, haven’t you? You’ve given up. Damn, you are pessimistic. Realistic, but pessimistic.” He laughed. “It’s important to you, right? Your image. That’s why you give all those speeches after you win, and why you attacked that news station, and it’s why you’re here today. Of all the things to just lie down and accept… That’s ironic, you know? What did you say at the jewelry store, that those hiding powers should stop allowing the weaklings - unpowered, I assume - to control them?” For once his detail-oriented memory was coming in use. “Sounds to me like you’re letting these ‘weaklings’ control you if you don’t think you can change their opinion. You’ve ‘accepted’ it.” He was doing this lightheartedly as an elaborate means of teasing her for jumping down his throat so quickly. That tone carried all the way through his little monologue.
Out of the corner of his eye, Blue Jay caught a flash of movement. A reporter - first on the scene, lucky her - had a camera out and had snapped a photo from about half a block away. As soon as she realized he’d spotted her, her shoulders tensed and she ducked into a nearby ally. He wondered how long it’d be before others started arriving. Being seen wasn’t too big of a worry for him; if worse came to worse, he could always just teleport down a floor into the building they were on top of.

"No rebuttal necessary, you outright admitted it yourself just in a lot of words," Aurora leaned back in her chair. "You're basing a lot of your self worth on what other people think about you. I know it's hard to admit, but you should be more honest with yourself."
Aurora took another sip of her drink as he started to try to analyze her. She was actually genuinely curious about what he had to say here, and her expression showed it to some extent. It was still very relaxed, she just stared at him without looking away, and without even blinking for awhile. However, as he spoke her expression grew disappointed, and after awhile, bored.
"I'm just going to take that as an attempt to insult me rather than analyze me because you were at least mildly successful at the former. If that was an analysis, it was so entrenched in your own mindset that it's hardly even worth acknowledging. There is very little that pisses me off more than peoples', especially super's, focus on unpowered people as if they matter at all. Nothing I've said was for them. Nothing I do has anything to do with them. The only reason I even bother to give them time to run away is because of what it would do to other supers if I didn't. There's no need to change their mind because their opinions don't even matter in the grand scheme of things."
Her ears finally caught the sounds of police sirens. A few people looting the empty stores took this opportunity to run away, as the last few signs of life cleared out. The only things left were the supers on the roof, the police coming, and the reporter trying to get a glimpse of what was going on. Sadly for her, it was just a whole lot of nothing. Aurora took a look at the expensive watch she was wearing to track the time and frowned.
"Two minutes, slower than I expected. I wonder if the fleeing crowd slowed them down..."
After thinking about that for a moment, and taking a moment to direct her aurora to be in the skies above the building rather than spread out over the whole area, she turned her attention back to Blue Jay.
"But I'll humor your implied question anyway, as though I decided to give up rather than shift my focus to more important things. In order to change someone's mind, there has to be something that they are misunderstanding somewhere. If there's no misunderstanding, then at best, you might be able to agree to disagree with the other person. There's no misunderstanding here. The unpowered people don't hate us because some supers are 'bad people.' I'll acknowledge it probably doesn't help, but it's not the core reason. We're just better than them, and they know this. If I wanted to, I could level this city and there wouldn't be a damn thing they could do about it. I could rip up the infrastructure, ruin any hope they have at a comfortable life, and even kill them without much effort. Most supers could do the same. They know this, they're afraid of this. It doesn't matter that I, that we, won't do anything, the mere fact that we could and they would be powerless to stop it is enough. Further, even if 100% of supers were completely honest, law abiding citizens who would never do anything 'bad' with their powers, it wouldn't change the fact that we're still better than them. If I started a moving company, or transported hazardous materials, no unpowered person could do it better than me. It wouldn't matter how hard they worked, how many connections they had, or anything else just because I happened to be born with a useful superpower. At least with other unpowered people who have a better education, talent, or what have you, there are other ways to compete, but that's impossible with supers. Why do you think they're trying so hard to keep us from using our powers professionally? Perhaps their reasons are still 'wrong,' but what does it matter if they completely understand the situation here? There's nothing to change."
Aurora paused as the police cars started to surround the building. Any moment now they'd be getting out of their cars, and one person would shout at her with a megaphone as always. She didn't really care. It was time to see what they would do now.
"Looks like the police are here, and some reporters too. If you want to keep your oh so pristine reputation in tact, you might want to get out of here."

Blue Jay burst out laughing. “Were you listening? That’s not what I’m saying at all.”
The inevitable police had arrived with their cars and fancy hats. Standing up, Blue Jay stepped back from the increasingly hazardous edge of the building. “Aurora you’re proving my point for me. You’re just making guesses at my motivations; I don’t even know how you got to thinking I cared so much about my public reputation.” Pausing for a moment, he retraced their conversation. “You called me a liar after I said a want to have a good reputation was a poor goal to have, that’s what it was.” He recollected. Tilting his head to the side, he said, “I was saying that it seems like I should try to shoot for a good reputation with the public because, I don’t know, there’s all those images of the grand hero helping out the common people in need.” A little ways back from the edge of the roof a group of air ventilation units stuck out like a hand trying to claw its way out of its tomb. Blue Jay picked the shortest and gave it the unintended use of his new seat. “Also because Seaside’s Bulwark is getting all chummy with the police.” He grumbled. “Can’t say I don’t want to be seen in that light, even if it is impossible. I was just reflecting aloud that perhaps I shouldn’t aim for something like that. It’d just be a long, uphill battle that wouldn’t actually help me accomplish anything I’m trying to do.” He shrugged. He couldn’t explain it any more clearly than that.
“So no, I don’t have some wall at my place covered in all the news stories mentioning me, bits about me circled in red and the ones I like best framed, just as I assume you don’t wallow in despair like a 60’s actor pining for her lost love about how the public will never accept us.” He joked. “When I said that, I knew I’d be mostly or completely wrong. That was kinda the point. I don’t know what’s going through your head any more than you do mine. How about next time, rather than presuming to know what I’m thinking, you just ask?” He shot her a wink.
White and blue cars could be seen on every side of the building, and the population down in the square was increasing like someone had spotted gold in one of the planters. Blue Jay was caught in a weird spot where if he left he’d be proving her point, but if he stayed it would seem like he was doing so only to prove his own.
He had said he would stick around and, as he wasn’t afraid of anything the police might try, he figured he may as well stay. He still had a bit to say, and he couldn’t say he wasn’t the tiniest bit curious as to how Aurora was going to deal with the police (plus he did want to make sure no one got crushed under falling rubble).
A police officer with a particularly fancy hat and badge had emerged from one of the cars and was now shouting something into a megaphone, but Blue Jay was more interested in the sheer quality and shininess of that badge (and his exchange with Aurora) than whatever she was saying. She must’ve polished it this morning.
The policewoman was still talking when Blue Jay spoke up again. “I’ll give that one to you, that unpowereds don’t like us because we are considerably more powerful and capable than them. Like, I would be the best mailman ever.” He said cheerfully. “But there’s a lot of diffrent things that can be drawn from that conclusion. Some might argue that therefore we, the supers, should be in charge of everything. Aurora for President, taken by popular vote or force. Others might say we should be carefully controlled exactly for that reason of yours, and though they’re few and far between, I’m sure some supers agree with that. Not that they’d admit to it; that’s how you get all the supers in a five mile radius to gang up on you. I would say we should use our abilities to help further society, just like smart people are working to make us snazzy quantum computers and 3D printed hearts. I even read one thing on the internet where a guy was saying supers are the next step in human evolution and we need to take out all the ‘weaker’ humans so we can rein as the true dominant species. But then they went on about something about aliens and reptiles in the government.” And those were only to name a few. Most people had some option, oftentimes a strong opinion, on the matter.
“I’ll go ahead and live what I preach and skip the speculation. What exactly do you draw from and what are you trying to accomplish with the knowledge that we’re stronger than ninety-nine point whatever of the population?”

"I never sp--"
While Aurora was perfectly happy to tune out the police most of the time, they were being loud, irritating, and were interrupting their conversation. The fact that they were still calling her Aurora Disco wasn't helping either. She narrowed her eyes, though it was more a sign that she thought they were inconvenient than a full on glare. With a wave of her hand, one of the many bags of trash and their contents that she picked up on her way here rematerialized and fell towards the ground. Even though the bag was fairly light, at this height it could do some damage if it hit anything. However, she materialized it far enough away that it wouldn't be in any danger of hitting more than concrete unless they dove into it, but was close enough that it should at least scare them. The police scattered, hiding behind their cars and other more solid objects as though she had just dropped a bomb. The bag landed on the ground with a light pomf.
"Ah fuck off!" she yelled at the people on the street and shook her head. "They act like they won't shoot me in the head if I surrendered like they asked. Anyway, as I was saying, I never speculated about why you decided to become a superhero or what your goals are. You said that you didn't expect to be thanked, but given how you've been handling things and your go to insults, that was obviously not the case. The rest of your statement was filled with so many cliches and buzzwords that I doubt even you knew what you were trying to say, so it's not like I could have gotten anything useful out of that if I tried. Anyway, you confirmed it by saying that you considered getting thank yous and peoples' opinion of you was part of the way you measure your own success. I didn't have to guess, you confirmed it all yourself. I didn't even think that pleasing people was your reason for getting involved in the super scene to begin with. As much self-loathing as there is in the Bulwark, I doubt even most of you hate yourselves that much."
Aurora set her drink down and folded her arms. At this point she looked more bored than anything. He was very intent on twisting her words and pulling out things that simply weren't there. Even when her logic was completely airtight and there was nothing useful to say to it, he just changed what they were talking about so he could ramble about something unimportant. It was embarrassing. At this point she was having more fun watching the police squirm.
"First, I didn't say that supers were necessarily stronger. Strength has very little to do with being able to move quickly, or drop slabs of concrete on people. Second, the fact that we're simply better than them means nothing. We shouldn't have to be the ones to deal with their fears and insecurities. Third, the idea that powers have an inherent purpose is absurd. The fact that we have powers should be irrelevant in the first place. They don't change what we as people should be doing, they just give us other means to do it. People should always fight for the world they want to see. What that means will vary from person to person, but the idea is roughly the same: fight all things bad, preserve all things good, ignore what society itself expects, be uncompromising in your own ethics and sense of self.
"Since you're obviously going to ask what that means for me specifically, right now I want to make this city a safe haven for supers. Once we're free to use our powers without flashy costumes or masks, and without having to worry about police action, I'll consider myself successful there and move onto the next thing. What that entails depends on how everyone else acts. I don't like to use more force than necessary, but I will also do what is necessary. About all I can tell you is that things are going to get worse, probably a lot worse, before they get better."
