He chuckled at her reaction. Leaning in again and resting his chin in both of his hands as he sighed wistfully at her words. Batting his eyelashes as a small blush crept up his cheeks. "You think I'm pretty"? His tone was soft, almost a whisper as his eyes moved down to the side of the table. Almost like he couldn't face her right now until he had composed himself.
Quickly clearing his throat as she got up, it seemed she was taking this as an opportunity to leave, hesitating only out of possible concern for how she appeared. Or perhaps the fear of what he might think of her. There were some people who had an ego that could not bare to let anyone think anything different than the carefully crafted image that they have constructed. All imperfections must be hidden and plastered over with polish so thik that they shine.
"You didn't hijack anything. I like learning about people. And I'd love to get to know you more."

Lia couldn't help but roll her eyes as she watched him, wondering if he actually took her statement as a compliment rather than a figure of speech. He'd seemed to entirely ignore the insult that came soon after, which she chose to take as a sign of selective hearing. He could think whatever he wanted about the exchange, and she'd have her own private thoughts.
"Well unfortunately there's not much else left to know about me," she explained with a sigh, shaking her head forlornly. The fact that she'd told so much of herself, while allowing him to say so little, was honestly shocking to Lia. Though perhaps it wasn't out of fear for being rude as she claimed. A moment of consideration, another smile, and she folded her hands in front of herself. "Though perhaps there's one more thing that might be interesting," she mused, eyes shining for a second. "I hate to be at a disadvantage. So I fully intend to talk to you again, Mr. Spencer."
Pushing her chair back into its usual position, she shifted to turn away from the table again. Alex was free to do whatever he wanted, but the library was suddenly seeming more and more stuffy for her to take.

"Oh I don't believe that for a second. I think you are selling yourself short."
He said with a knowing smile. A smile that seemed to say that everyone was special and unique and worth knowing. A smile that may have belonged on Mr. Rogers if he was a young man in college. But it was a smile that said that she was wonderful just the way she was. The smile only brightened when she implied that he, himself was interesting. And declared that she would be talking to him again. It seemed like he had found some way to wiggle past her wall that she surrounded herself with. And maybe, just maybe he might find a place in her heart, filling it with warmth and friendship.
"I can't wait. And if you ever need a study buddy I'm more than willing to join you."
He offered as she shifted to turn her back to him. He wouldn't stop her if she continued to leave, that was up to her. Instead he would just crack open his books and start getting to work on his own assignments. Because he hadn't been lying. He did have a report to do.

"I'll be sure to keep that in mind," she replied with a quiet chuckle, not even sure herself if that statement was honest. What a weird guy. No really, what a weirdo. At a certain point she'd become absolutely certain that he was putting up a front, something that she was all too familiar. Sitting at the table, asking questions, not saying much about himself. It all reeked of someone who was skilled at deflecting another person's attention.
Or so she'd thought? The longer they talked she became even less sure, wondering if perhaps his smiles and encouragement were really meant to be taken at face value. There was no way though, right? No way, she could see through his mask. Maybe. If there was a mask? Maybe there wasn't? Ugh, her mind had begun chasing itself in circles of bluffs and double bluffs and triple bluffs. Sometimes people were just nice, not that she'd ever had much luck finding someone like that herself. Maybe Alex was just nice? Except he definitely wasn't, right? Now she was just stuck on repeat again.
Lia waved over her shoulder briefly, not even pausing to give a proper goodbye. Had she made a friend? Or an enemy? Maybe he was more like an interesting new acquaintance.
