Azoth was going to write down ‘simple jobs can never be simple’ as a law of the universe akin to gravity. She had thought she had found a counterpoint to this theory in the retrieval of Timothy Oliver. That mission had been nearly completed without a single hitch; when supers had shown up, as they always do, Unhallow, Geata, and she had been able to drive them off without the need for battle. Getting Oliver himself was simple, made more so by Geata’s assistance. They’d even found some additional information in Oliver’s car to perhaps help her client consider… better terms. None on her side were hurt, and they’d left before the police could arrive. It was supposed to be proof that missions could, indeed, happen without some fallacious super making a mess of things because they can, or a fight forcing her to leave before a simple goal could be accomplished, or some other stupid happenstances getting in her way for no discernible reason beyond math hated her guts. And then they fell down a hole. There was little avoiding it and less expecting it. Azoth had been returning to the Isle with Unhallow to meet up with Geata when the ground rumbled, cracked, and opened up beneath them. Thankfully the fall wasn’t far - just a few feet - but a neighbouring building decided to join in on the collapsing. And them in the hole. Left with the options of being crushed by oncoming building or flee into the opened underground foundations of the city, Azoth chose the one that was less of an immediate threat on her life. They’d had some luck at least, if any of this could be called lucky, in that the hole they’d fallen down left quick access to an old cement foundation of a once-bank, which seemed to be in better condition than a lot of the other underground structures and even some above ground. It weathered the collapse fine, though the way out was soon blocked with rubble, and the old thirty by thirty foot vault was plunged into darkness. Azoth created a fire lamp. Then she created a second lamp, in case the first went out, and made a mental note to keep an eye on the oxygen levels and the fumes the lamps would produce. After catching her breath from enough adrenaline to last her the next two weeks, she set about silently surveying the area and their situation. It wasn’t that she didn’t want to talk to Unhallow. Or was at all nervous about being alone and trapped in almost darkness with someone who’d attacked her and she’d seen stab her like Unhallow. There were simply more pressing matters. There didn’t seem to be an immediate way out of this predicament; it was the structure’s one door that they’d been able to enter through, and that was pretty well closed off now. She’d checked her phone. As good a coverage plan as she had, it didn’t reach through feet of concrete to bank vaults that hadn’t seen people in decades. She could always dig up or out, but that was going to take a while. But, it was probably what she was going to have to do, unless Unhallow had any other ideas. Carefully, if they didn’t want anything else falling down on them. Azoth made a pair of plastic chairs, a third lamp, and a gallon of water in a plastic container. After giving the air in the vault a refresh, removing the stale air and gas fumes and replacing it with air as fresh as what one would find above ground, she settled down in one of the chairs and began to plan how exactly they were going to get out of here. Water was the bane of their existence. Unhallow could normally tell when floors were unstable and shouldn't be walked on. They could normally tell when their power would be enough to make the floor that weak, but this was a little harder. Combine that with water damage, and Unhallow was completely useless at telling when a floor would be unstable when they walked over it. The floor always looked perfectly stable to them in these circumstances, and this time was no exception. By the time they saw the ground cracking under their feet, it was already too late, too late to even shout a warning to Azoth. They collapsed on the ground and Unhallow was just barely able to roll out of the way the hole absorbed more buildings, those buildings landing mere millimeters away from Unhallow's vitals. The entire experience left them breathing heavily and their heart pounding in their chest. They stayed there, motionless, while they tried to calm themselves down. They couldn't afford to be like this with an ally nearby.
Slowly, they started to get their bearings. The buildings that nearly crushed them blocked the obvious exit. There was enough rubble that it would take awhile to clear it, even with Azoth's power. Unhallow didn't keep a cellphone on them anymore, since it tended to stop working with in minutes, but the fact that Azoth wasn't using one meant that there was no point in trying. In other words, they were trapped here for the time being. Unhallow felt a lump form in their throat and the anxiety and sense of panic they had just suppressed start to return. The situation quickly became awkward. The worst part was this place was really big, and even if Unhallow probably could see the entire structure, it would still take a little while to find an exit.
"I-I'll see if I can just...find a way out."
There was a slight shake to their voice, but it was masked by the voice modulator they were using, which was extra staticy because of the current situation. They rose to their feet, but didn't bother to move from that spot. It was nice of Azoth to make a chair for them too, at least that's what they assumed it was for, but it would be a terrible idea for them to sit that close to her. They were fine in the corner, as far away from Azoth as they could get without going down other tunnels.
The minutes passed, but they felt like hours. Every moment Unhallow hoped that Azoth would say something, but she never did. For a little while, Unhallow was at least able to listen to all the noise with in the city itself and eavesdrop on what people were talking about on the surface, but in the end, it just made them even more nervous. They were sure it was just them, especially since Azoth both invited them to help her and even created a chair for them in this situation, but Unhallow felt like they could cut the tension in the room with a knife. Eventually, it got to be too much for them to handle, and they suddenly blurted out what was on their mind, only for them to raise their hands to their helmet like they were covering their mouth after.
"Why were you working with Pandaemonium?"

Unhallow’s comment was loud enough and unexpected enough in the silence that Azoth was momentarily startled from her work. The slowly forming platinum cube beside her halted in its growth. Azoth looked to Unhallow, then with her power looked to the hole she had been working on digging upwards a few meters to her right. The cube began again gaining in weight.
“I’m unsure which instance you are referring to.” Azoth said slowly, carefully not in word choice but because her attention was divided. She thought through her recent missions that had involved Pandaemoniums. “If you mean when I destroyed that laboratory with Aurora, I was working with her because her goals aligned with mine, her powers were well-suited for the mission, and because I see benefit in cultivating an allyship with someone as powerful and influential as her. If you are instead referring to when I attempted to raid a government building with Sanduleak, that is because I needed help and he owed me a favor. I do not go out of my way to work with members of Pandaemonium, but I see no reason to avoid doing so either. Faction is not a large factor in my decision of if I work with someone or not.”
Unhallow had seemed shocked by their question, but Azoth didn’t linger on this. She figured that was a good enough answer, and so returned her full attention to making a hole upwards. It needed only be large enough for them to get through; she could create a ladder to walk up, fixing any rungs Unhallow might break. She needed only be careful to watch what her powers were digging into for fear of bringing more structures down on top of them. What threatened to break she had to quickly reinforce, and anything that would spill water she had to clog. Azoth didn’t know how long it would take for her to make them their way out, but the sooner she could, the better. She already knew she didn’t last very long around Unhallow’s powers.

"...There was more than one time?" Unhallow, paused for a moment, and blinked several times before shaking their head. "But even if your goals align, they just do things...wrong. Though if my goals aligned with theirs, I'd be really concerned about what I'm trying to do," Unhallow started wringing their hands. "I-I mean, just take the incident with the Disco person. She's basically responsible for making people not want to do science anymore here right? Th-That's going to hurt everyone isn't it? Especially us, now we can't use those labs anymore...I mean, there's a reason Athanasia wants to get rid of them all right? Are you really--" Unhallow paused for a moment, debating on whether or not they wanted to finish that sentence, before their voice got quiet. "Really that short-sighted? The people you work with matter right? We're...We're all supposed to be better than that right?"
By the end, Unahllow's voice was barely audible. This entire situation was really uncomfortable, but there was no avoiding it now was there. Their senses watched as Azoth continued digging, happy to have at least a little bit of a distraction. Using her power probably would be the fastest way out of here wouldn't it be? The tunnels were just too expansive to walk through, and there was no telling how long Azoth would last this close to them. Their head perked up when they saw something dangerous ahead.
"You're about to dig into a big pocket full of water. You'll have to go to the left."

Azoth stopped the use of her power abruptly. “Ah, thank you.” She was silent for a moment longer, while she worked out where the water was and how far left she would have to go to avoid it. Once that task was complete, Azoth returned to digging upwards to where a torrent of water would not be dumped on them. Even if Unhallow’s power was acting as a kind of timer, Azoth could at least afford to act a little swifter, focus more on the actual digging than on what may lay ahead, with them watching.
“Whether or not they do things ‘wrong’ is not of importance, as long as they are an aid to my own goals. Further, goals will always overlap at some point. The reasons behind those goals may not be conquering, but that rarely matters. If a job is done, a job is done.” Azoth said simply. She turned her head to look at the black figure in the darkness. “Unhallow, that lab was researching means of ridding supers of their powers. If the government obtained such knowledge, it would give them a powerful weapon against us. That cannot be allowed.”
She would have preferred to have gotten more of the research for herself from that mission, but such things could not always be helped. It was still a gain to have the laboratory gone rather than allowing them to continue their research. It had occurred to Azoth that it would be more optimal to influence the laboratories to other subjects of studies, but she was not presently in the position to do so. She had taken the means that had been available to her.
Azoth let out a huff. “I am somewhat insulted. It was not a short-sighted move, it was for the best of supers as a whole. Who you work with does matter, yes, but mostly in what allyships may be made. To worry about the reputation of those people is silly and inefficient. I do not understand why you are criticizing my occasional company, especially when you spend as much time as you do with Sin Eater.”

Unhallow held their breath while Azoth dug around the water, though not because they were afraid of the area flooding. The idea of the cavern slowly being flooded wasn't nearly as frightening as the idea of upsetting Azoth. They didn't expect any kind of retaliation from Azoth, but that didn't change their feelings about this. Even though it didn't take long for her to start talking again it felt like hours. The words and the tone made Unhallow shrink back and start tugging on some of the looser parts of their costume.
"A-And now it's gone, along with most of the other research facilities in Emerald City. It could have still discovered things about powers r-right? S-So a little bit of quiet sabotage on the bad parts and..." Unhallow stopped and swallowed hard. "Because they're our enemies, they won't do things right, and then they'll make things worse because that's what they do. It's what they always do. And working with them let's them do those things, and gives them legitimacy and..."
Unhallow stopped, they honestly had no idea where they were going with that and were just starting to ramble. Part of it was repeating what other people had told them, even if they didn't completely understand it, it sounded reasonable to them at least. When Azoth brought up Sin Eater, they blinked a few times and tilted their head. They sounded genuinely confused, and not like they were trying to avoid the question or the comparison.
"I don't understand, what does Sin Eater have to do with Pandaemonium?"

“Perhaps, if Emerald City was the only place in the country that performed research. The labs may have been driven out of the city, but they have been driven to others in the nation. Research on subjects involving useful topics such as super powers has not entirely ceased, and with the easy transfer of information and scientific results via the internet and scientific journals, we can still directly benefit from research done as far away as the other side of the country. In other countries, in some cases. I suppose this is both a blessing and a curse.” Azoth sighed. “I cannot stop research on removing powers everywhere, but I can at least make it known that such efforts will not be appreciated. By destroying the lab, our small team has made a precedence of super violence against study of such a subject - that specific subject, not any other related to powers - that may dissuade other scientists from trying the same. That could not be achieved through subtle manipulation. I would not have been able to accomplish this task without the aid of Aurora Disicio. Whatever you may think of it, I do not regret my actions and should the need arise, I will not hesitate to work with her again.”
Azoth tilted her head to the side questionly. “I do not see how occasionally working with Pandaemonium legitimises all of their actions. It legitimizes their actions in that one instance, yes, but in that case I am,” she paused, “I guess one way to put it is I am channeling that ‘not right’ initiative into something useful. Then, if we go by that logic, the more we work with Pandaemonium, the better, as we can put their energy to use. There is no denying they are powerful and destructive, but that is simply an opportunity to,” she paused again, “pull the puppet strings?” Azoth nodded. It was a little colder of a phrase than she would like, as she did value allyships with powerful supers to be greater than some pawn, such as a politician, she could move about to her needs, but it would be untrue to suggest she was not in some part using them for their power, even should the results be mutually beneficial.
“And is that not the tactic, job even, of many Keepers?” She concluded.
The air had begun to smell like the smoke from the lanterns. Azoth paused both in speaking and digging to again refresh the air in the pocket, and took another to check to make sure no poisonous gas was seeping in from her dug tunnel. The task could have waited a while longer, but she did not want to let smoke and possible natural gasses compound on top of her with Unhallow’s power.
“Sin Eater does not, in herself have much to do with Pandaemonium. From my knowledge.” She added. Somehow, if Sin Eater had some strange hand in the madness of Pandaemonium, it would not surprise her. “I mean that in terms of the company you keep. I cannot say I care for Sin Eater; she has attacked me, unprovoked, on two separate occasions.” Azoth abently brushed the last of a lingering bruise from the most recent. “I do not understand why she would do so, purposefully, when we are both Keepers and I have not done anything I know of to upset her. Who you spend time with is entirely your choice, but, in turn, who I spend my time with is entirely mine.”
Azoth hesitated, her gaze drifting away and downwards to her hand, and continued slowly. “On that instance, why,” her voice caught. “Why were you using your powers on me?”

This entire conversation was getting frustrating. Unhallow knew Azoth's arguments were wrong, but they couldn't articulate why they were wrong. They were starting to really understand some of the other things they were told regarding why there was so much infighting among the Keepers. There were some that were truly interesting in the well being and growth of the world and wanted to protect it, and there were others that were just using the organization for their own gain while ignoring the duty that came with it. Unhallow was starting to fear that Azoth was in the latter category.
"So...you admit you didn't accomplish much of anything, and pushed the research out of your sphere of influence so you won't be able to manipulate it anymore...and you're claiming that you're manipulating Disco by...doing exactly what she wants, using her tactics, against her target of choice? I-I'm sorry, I think I'm missing something here."
Despite how sarcastic the words sounded, they weren't actually trying to be difficult. That was simply what they heard, they thought there had to be a lot more to it than that because otherwise the action didn't make any sense at all.
"Sin Eater's...weird. Some of the stuff she does to me seems unprovoked sometimes, but she always has a reason for it. Maybe you should try talking to her? She's normally willing, and I'm sure everything between you is just a misunderstanding."
The last question made Unhallow wring their hands again. It was uncomfortable, but it was exactly why they ended up bringing this up in the first place, even if it was unintentional. A small lump formed in their throat, and they had to pause for a moment to make sure their heart rate didn't increase from the anxiety of it all. Once they did speak, their voice was quieter than before.
"Because I had to stop you. You were working with Pandaemonium, and Sin Eater said it was important that information not get leaked and..." Unhallow paused and sighed. "And that it was important that we discourage you from doing it again. Just...Just stay with us. I don't want to have to fight you..."

They didn’t want to fight her, but they had. Because she had to be stopped? From what, obtaining information for the Keepers from a lab? Doing her job for the benefit of the entire faction? Azoth clenched her fists at Unhallow’s words. She tried to let it pass, at least so long as to allow her to dig them out of here. The more thoughts that churned in her head, the slower her progress. The cube beside her only inched up in growth. The progress of tunnel above became a crawl. But the more she tried to concentrate the harder it was because every time she tried to turn away from the subject she saw Unhallow with a knife, running at her and plunging the blade into her stomach without an ounce of hesitation or remorse. Azoth clenched her teeth, her posture dropping and becoming visibly tense.
She took several deep breaths. Start from the top; she had other things she could think about, and she was glad for the distraction.
“Yes, you misunderstand me.” She said calmly, though she did not look up from her hands. “I did accomplish something; as I said, I have set a precedence. Scientists elsewhere in the country will be more hesitant to attempt such research for fear of super attacks, and supers elsewhere will know that they may be able to stop those who try, because others have succeeded in ending such dangerous research. It is a subtle victory, but quiet manipulation would have been likewise. Besides, had I tried manipulation, I would also have pushed the research beyond my sphere of influence. By making a loud example as I have, I have in essence passed the initiative on to others who may be able to deal with similar problems in their areas. I have let them know there is a problem in a way subtlety would not have accomplished.”
Not that she wouldn’t have minded employing subtle manipulation, nor was it her original goal to entirely destroy the lab. She had only wanted to be rid them of that specific data; that the mission had grown more destructive than she had intended was unfortunate. She did not, however, regret any of it. The benefit was perfectly suitable to her needs.
“I was not doing as Aurora Disicio wanted; I was doing as I wanted, and our goals so happened to align. Her reasons might have been different than mine and her tactics may have been different than what I usually employ, but if the results are desirable, that hardly matters.”
Likewise, Azoth did not see it as… entirely impossible that her issues with Sin Eater were all a misunderstanding. She would certainly prefer that explanation to any of the alternatives she was considering.
“I would be willing to discuss it with her.” Azoth said quietly. “I would much prefer an understanding and truce, of sorts, with her than continue hostilities. I have-” She hesitated, going silent for a number of seconds. She couldn’t avoid the subject forever, and it seemed she had reached the limit’s end.
Azoth let out a long sigh. “I have no desire to fight you, Unhallow. Nor do I Sin Eater, but you especially. You are my friend. I find I enjoy your company, and I don’t want to lose that because of unnecessary conflict. But,”
She looked quickly up at Unhallow, wearing an expression not dissimilar to panic. Her stomach certainly felt like she was in a panic. Her voice raised, both in volume and speed. “I wasn’t working with any Pandaemoniums. I was working alone that day. I had chosen specifically not to tell Aurora Disicio or any other Pandaemoniums, any other people at all, my plans because I wished to make sure before all of the labs left or were destroyed that we obtain for ourselves what they had discovered. Take their data so we might further stop such research, and so that we know what they have found. I was going to share it with the Keepers so that we can try to find a way to counteract it. I was searching for leads on other laboratories in collaboration.” Azoth’s gaze shot down to her fists, her brow furrowed, her nails digging into her pants. “I do not understand why you would harm me when I was alone. When I was trying to protect us.”
A shake had come into her voice and into her shoulders. Both she tried to quell, but the attempts at the second were in vain and the first was only to be replaced with an edge of coldness. “But that is not your point, is it? You are saying you will stop me, should my actions go against what you deem I should do. Attacking me will not discourage me for my goals, Unhallow.”
Again Azoth paused, attempting to take a moment to regain herself. When she spoke again, her voice was quiet. “Should I betray you, I cannot fault you in taking action against me. However, should you do so unjustly, it is a betrayal against me. Please, Unhallow, don’t betray me.”

Situations like this were always extremely stressful for Unhallow. Even before getting their powers, they were reasonably attuned to the emotions of other people. Getting their powers turned that up to a whole new level. They could feel every twitch of Azoth's muscles, even forced breath, and numerous things that no one would ever even see and that Azoth herself was likely not conscious of. Unhallow's mouth went dry. It was already hard to breathe, but it was somehow getting even worse by the second.
Unhallow still had trouble following Azoth's reasoning, but they didn't think she was explaining it badly. They knew that if Pandaemonium went to fight a dragon they wouldn't be inclined to stop them, but that still seemed like something different. Maybe it was because they didn't agree with the conclusion? Making them hide wouldn't stop it would it? It would just make it harder to find. At least, that's what everyone seemed to say about a lot of things. Everything was so complicated that they couldn't keep up with it anymore. They wished everything could be as simple as before, when everything made sense, before everyone seemed to be fighting each other all the time.
They didn't hear all of Azoth's speech. They tried their best to listen, but it felt like the whole room was spinning. Unhallow was doing their best to hold back the tears, if only because their costume was horribly uncomfortable when the parts around the face got wet, and it was taking all their focus just to do that and stay standing. Unhallow heard the end in full clarity though, and that was enough for any attempts to hold back their emotions fail. Their knees gave out, making them collapse on the ground. They started sobbing hard enough that it was almost difficult to tell what it was through the voice modulator, and hard enough that it was almost impossible for them to breathe combining that with frequent gasping for air. They put their hands on the top of their helmet and leaned into the wall beside them, finding it difficult to even support their body that much. When the words did come they were choked out and barely coherent.
"Wh-What am I even supposed to do? What's the point of being in an organization if people can't even agree on what to do? Always, no matter what I do I always end up hurting someone. Am I supposed to watch when people do something they shouldn't? But then what about everyone else? What the hell am I supposed to do?!" The last sentence came out more like a high pitched scream than talking. Even after that, the tears didn't stop, and their body couldn't stop shaking.

Unhallow’s reaction all but stopped the growing tension in Azoth. For several seconds she could do nothing but stare blankly, slack-jawed at her friend. She had not expected such a reaction. She was not used to receiving such reactions, or even being within proximity of people when they happened. She felt… bad, almost. Like there was a rock in her stomach, and like maybe she should do something to comfort Unhallow. Subconsciously her body moved to stand, before she caught and stopped herself. Getting near Unhallow would only make it more difficult to make it out of here, and would put herself at risk. That meant words were what she was left with.
And Azoth was not very good at comforting words. She would do her best to help her friend, however; it was her duty to Unhallow. She would offer what she could.
“Unhallow.” She began softly. “It’s impossible to make everyone happy. It’s impossible to not hurt someone, no matter what you do. This is true for everyone, and trying otherwise will only hurt yourself and others.” Azoth paused, and looked ahead. She wondered how best to put this. “Do what is best for you, Unhallow.” She paused again, and after a moment, nodded to herself. “If that means picking a side, you cannot be faulted for choosing the one you care about the most. Be that because you personally want it, or because someone you care about wants it, either way it is important to you personally, and therefore what you should be doing. Or, if that means stopping conflict altogether, so be it. You should decide for yourself what you want.”

It was difficult to breathe. The helmet already could be suffocating, this entire room was already suffocating, and the sobs just kept coming making it even more difficult to breathe. It didn't help that Unhallow was holding their breath when they could to try to get the sobbing to stop. Every attempt to make it stop made the sobs come back worse than before. Every so often they'd stop momentarily so they could breathe again, granted it sounded more like they were choking on the air than anything. It took a moment again, but Unhallow was able to talk again in short bursts. Their voice was shrill, and there were often long pauses in the middle of the sentences while their lungs heaved or they really needed to breathe again.
"You don't get it!" Unhallow shouted, frustrated. "I can't do anything right! It's always been like this...even before getting...getting my powers. When stuff started breaking around me all the time no...no one even noticed. It was like nothing even...changed."
Unhallow stopped to catch their breath again and to try to make sense of Azoth again. Her words weren't complicated this time, but Unhallow's mind felt so hazy that it was hard to think about anything right now.
"It's not that easy! I wish...I wish it was. I...everyone...why? Why does everyone hate each other so much? I...I don't want to fight. Anyone...! But...But it keeps happening. I don't understand. I don't get it at all! A-And now working with...it'll just...We're all supposed to be on the same side. Why does this keep happening?" Unhallow's breathing started to become a bit more regular. "I owe the Keepers everything. I don't want to fight anyone but...but I can't work against them. I...I can't. I..."
No further words came. Her sobbing stopped, but it was clear from the frequent hiccups, sniffles and occasional choke that she hadn't stopped crying yet.

Azoth shifted uncomfortably in her chair, fidgeting like she didn’t quite know what to do with her hands. The air in the room felt heavy, yet thin. Azoth paused again to do an air refresh, but found the level of oxygen was still suitable. Again it struck her that she should probably do something to try to comfort Unhallow, but found likewise that she still lacked much for means. Food had occurred to her, but that would come upon the same troubles as last time. Hugs comforted her, but that wasn’t particularly reasonable… What else comforted people? Azoth pressed her fingers together a couple times and resolved to asking Geata later.
It was a couple of beats after Unhallow had finished when Azoth spoke again, quietly but certainly. “Then don’t. If a fight brings you against someone you don’t want to fight, weigh what you are fighting for against the harm you would cause the person in question. If it’s not worth it to fight them, then don’t. No matter what anyone might tell you, or whoever might be made mad.” Azoth’s gaze drifted abstractly to the other corner of the room. “I don’t ever fight my friends, unless they chose to fight me first. It’s one of the few lines I will not cross when completing favors. If participating in a battle causes harm to someone close to me by no volition of theirs, I will simply neglect to participate. If my allies wish to fight each other, I will attempt to stop them, but not with force.”
This was something she had only recently discovered, but it rang more true than just about anything else she had found since she began her work as a super. It seemed relevant to share with Unhallow. “Taking care of those you care about is the most important thing.” She stated, nodding to herself. Then, helpfully, “If you cannot do that as you are, then you simply need to become more powerful. If you lack the strength to protect all of those people, gain more strength. Perhaps… ending battles before they start would prove useful to you?” Azoth nodded again to herself. “You might employ intimidation, for instance, to attempt to get opposition to step down before a fight has to begin. Other Keepers would likely appreciate a bypassed fight, as well.”
Azoth pressed her fingers together again and looked awkwardly around the room. Wondered if she should return to digging, she elected, probably, that was for the best, and resumed. “And,” she added, making another attempt at reassurance (another skill she was going to have to inquire to Geata for tips on), “it’s okay to make mistakes and to fail. Such instances are unavoidable, and are often," Azoth sighed, remembering herself as soon as a few months ago, "commonplace. Use them to get stronger, learn from them and move on. Eventually you will succeed.”

The hiccups stopped (mostly), but Unhallow couldn't get the tears themselves to stop. Feeling was returning to their body, though they still felt weak. It was enough that they at least felt comfortable enough to force themselves back onto their feet. Unhallow almost immediately regretted doing that when Azoth started talking again. Their knees didn't get weak this time though. They were still feeling sad and useless, but the more Azoth talked the more they were feeling outright betrayed. If it was anyone else, Unhallow would have thought she was making fun of them, but that seemed unlikely here. The sadness didn't go away, but it started to give way to frustration and outright anger. Unhallow swallowed hard several times, shaking slightly, before they could talk again. Even then, their words came out slowly and shakily.
"My first family...everyone I knew then...they're all dead or horribly disfigured. Except me. My second family is dead. Except me. I ha to chase my friends away from me because they liked to hug me and spend time around me. I sent a classroom of students to the hospital because a test was difficult. I sent someone I liked...s-someone I really liked...to the hospital with a collapsed lung and what they could only describe as a melting liver and kidneys. I gave my little sister brain damage because she was worried about me and spent too much time outside my room. All these things happened because these people had the misfortune of being close to me. Power is part of the problem here, not the solution! And I won't let you or anyone else undermine the last thing I have!"
Unhallow's voice started out quiet, but by the end they were shouting loudly enough that their voice echoed throughout the chamber. It took a moment for them to realize what they just said, and while it wasn't wrong, it wasn't the words they would have used in most circumstances. The tears came back stronger than ever, and it sounded like they were choking on the air again. They couldn't stay here anymore, the entire situation was just unbearable now. They were starting to wish they never agreed to come on this mission in the first place. Unhallow started walking towards one of the tunnels, more quickly than normal, but they still weren't about to run here. At this point it would be better to find their own way out.
"Why are you so stupid!"

Azoth couldn’t say she remembered the last time she’d had her words stick in her throat quite like this. She’d had her last thrown back at her, and now the rest were hesitant to follow in fear of meeting the same fate. Azoth swallowed, thought to say something, stopped herself, and fell silent. Digging was the most important thing she could do right now. What could she say that wouldn’t just make matters worse, anyway? She hadn’t realized that’s what Unhallow had been through, and, simply, couldn’t relate. Harming unpowereds was not a concern of hers. Those she cared about, moreso, but the answer here was still for Unhallow to gain strength. Get more control over their powers. With that, they could lessen the harm they unwittingly caused to others and their problem would be solved. It seemed obvious to Azoth, and she couldn’t explain it any more plainly than she already had to the other Keeper.
Azoth winced at what seemed to be Unhallow’s parting words, but didn’t respond. They were upset, and those were upset words. They didn’t reflect Unhallow’s true thoughts. She would hope Unhallow to forgive such slips from her, and so would do the same for them. She was, however, inclined to let Unhallow be off on their own. Mostly because she didn’t know what to say to stop them, and it was likely their powers would allow them to find their way around well enough.
Means presented themselves when she felt her power take street level air, and light began to trickle down the hole.
“Unhallow, wait.” Azoth said, a little more abruptly than she intended to.
She put a hand to where her lip was under her scarf, removed it quickly, and got to her feet. The amount of light coming down grew, and a latter began to form at the base of the hole. Azoth pointed up.
“I completed the tunnel.” She stated. “You will waste time wandering in the underground. Give me a moment and I’ll build a ladder out.”
She did just that; a few of the cubes of metal around her began to shrink, and a metal ladder formed and grew swiftly upwards. Once it was complete, she spoke again. “You should go first. The ladder should hold, but I will keep an eye on it and make repairs if need be. It’s a bit of a climb, but if you fall, I’ll catch you with a sheet of metal.”
Azoth had failed on many levels in this conversation, and the pit remained strong in her gut for it. But this, at least, she could do.
