She expected to get enough help from within the super community, a group of one-in-a-million teenagers, many of whom didn't have a high school degree, let alone a college one. He'd bet that Aurora was the first time the vast majority of these people had put up a building, forget designed a structurally sound one. What was Aurora going to do? Look up “architecture 101” on the internet? She had to be kidding herself if she thought she was going to pull off something entire governments had yet to figure out with a handful of young adults. All while the other half of these young adults tried to stop her. Maybe the police wouldn't be able to resist her, but how much of the super community did she seriously expect not to try to keep her from taking over their city - forcefully, by the sounds of it - let alone help? No wonder Seraphim hadn't deemed her presently much of a threat; as long as she was set on this step, she wasn't going to get off the ground.
Bolide deflated slightly at her question. “Not much, honestly. Change doesn’t happen very quickly, not with modern peaceful tactics. We got some news stories, some fund raising; the biggest thing was we convinced local government to investigate into a company we knew was practicing misconduct and even got them brought to court.” His grumble worsened. “They got off with a fine they’d have recouped in a month and we got mayoral candidates preaching to us pro-feminist promises for one election cycle. But that’s how it always is. Change’ll happen, it just comes slowly and you’ve got to work long and hard if you want it to go in the direction you want. Last I heard, they’re trying to use the rallied attention to get some equal wage legislation passed. I’m wishing them luck.”
“I can’t tell you how relieved I am to hear you’ve actually put some goddamn thought into your plan.” He said through another bite of sandwich. “You have any idea how many people I’ve met who have these grandiose ideologies and not the slightest idea of how to achieve them? It was, actually, the other reason I was worried.” He admitted. “There's some rumors going around that your plans aren't thought through and you're carrying the faction off a cliff. Those gossiping assholes.” Bolide stood. “It’s a high bar, but humans have done it before.” He turned to Aurora with a proud grin. “And they didn’t have super powers. I’m sure we can pull it off. You've got my help, I can assure you that.”

It was times like this that Aurora was glad she didn't need to find a way to work with the people she was trying to fight against. It didn't matter if the unpowered people didn't like what she was doing. It didn't matter if they tried to stop her given she was ignoring society and law and they couldn't beat her in a one on one fight. It didn't matter if they left. It didn't matter if they tried to retaliate. Nothing she was trying had anything to do with them. Trying to get better wages however, required cooperation from the people causing the problem in the first place. Aurora was glad she at least wasn't in a situation like that anymore. She could only imagine how annoying it must be, and was part of why she didn't want to bother changing peoples' minds anymore. The fact that he stuck with it spoke well of him. She took a swig of milk before continuing.
"People really are insufferable, it's frustrating." She looked at the sunrise again and sighed. "But I suppose that's why the world needs people like us. Not very many people are willing to tolerate that much stupidity and pain just to make things better."
Aurora nodded. "I've been working towards this for two years now, I've had time. I wouldn't be moving this dangerously if I didn't know what I wanted to do already. I haven't been able to do as much planning as I would like because I don't know what resources I'm going to have, but I do know that even if we are going to lack expertise we will be able to replace a lot of that with superpowers. I don't need to know a lot about logistics or how to transport things personally in order to make effective use of my power in that regard, I suspect a lot of people will work the same way." She took another irritated bite of her sandwich. "But first I need to get everyone on the same page and working together, and before that I need to get control over Pandaemonium."

It was times like these that Solomon was glad his chosen mask usually covered all of his face. On one hand, he was extraordinarily pleased that Bolide had been included in people the world needed, but on the other, it took a large chunk of his willpower to keep himself from choking on the last of his milk. The rest of it went to swallowing down the stupidity and pain to maintain his smile. He got a wash of that feeling he was getting in fairly regular bursts recently, like he was acting out himself from several years ago. Just with an unhealthy dose of idealism thrown in.
“That’s why people like us need to stick together. These people, they wear even the toughest down. Sometimes it feels like nothing’s changing despite working until your bones show and no amount of pushing will get anything through these idiots’ heads. Having people you can count on to tell you to keep going - hell, just to hold a sane conversation with every once in awhile - I didn’t realize how necessary it was until I didn’t have it anymore.” He joined her in looking at the sunrise over the city, his voice quiet but as certain as always. “I’m glad I met you, Aurora.”
So she was intending to supplement knowledge with super powers, and even knew she was pushing things quickly. This was… troubling.
He crushed the empty milk carton for easier recycling and slipped it back into his bag. “You’ve already got plans for getting control over Pandaemonium,” he thought aloud, “and working together should come together fairly quickly after everyone’s unified. Are there any people you’re having particular trouble with?”

Aurora's lips curled into a soft smile. Yes, it was important that everyone stick together, but it was especially important for the people that wanted to change the world to do so. People like that were rare. She never felt like she was working alone, or even that she was alone in general, but no one seemed to care as much as she did. Everything going on never seemed to bother people as much as it bothered her, sometimes even if they were directly affected and she wasn't. She hated having to look at all the imperfections in the world, and wanted to fix every last one of them. Even if Bolide didn't feel quite that strongly, it seemed like he really cared about injustices involving humans at the very least. Even a lot of her supporters didn't seem to feel that strongly, granted many of them were very young. Some people were unhappy with how they were being treated, others had nowhere to go, others seemed to be more interested in impressing her, getting on her good side, or becoming friends. It was nice to meet someone that seemed to be doing this for the right reason.
"Yes. That makes it all the more important that I do not fail." Her expression hardened again, her gaze never leaving the sunrise. "Not everyone can do this, and people are counting on the people that can. People are counting on me to make everything right here. I'd say even the ones that don't support me are as well, even if they're not aware of it. My biggest opponents are the ones that want Pandaemonium to remain what it was: chaotic, violent, without purpose. Most people are not naturally like that. There are some that were like that, who have settled down since my take over. That is proof of that. Those people tend to be profoundly unhappy. I don't want to abandon them either." That might be more information than he was looking for, but it was important. "Because of how Pandaemonium was, there are some that simply don't like me. That alone is enough to get some people to interfere with what I'm doing. Given how irrational that is, they're willing to act against their interests. It's irritating, but even so, I don't want to abandon them either."
Aurora sighed. "I still need to figure out what to do about them and..." she hesitated. "And how far I will need to go."

Bolide caught Aurora’s smile from the corner of his eye, and for a moment, his own flicked wider. His memory might be failing him, but that seemed that was the first time he’d seen her smile. He’d take it as another sign he was succeeding.
But, again, with it came another worry. Surely it was simply that some people didn’t like her that they would try to stop her from changing Pandaemonium today, and tomorrow the city. Not because they actually did enjoy their way of life - chaotic, violent, unfocused, or however else they were opposed to Aurora’s and her goals, perhaps having unpowered friends and family that would be fairly largely and negatively impacted by her plans of a self-sustaining super city - and didn’t want the one Aurora was forcibly shoving onto them. He wondered how much of other lifestyles Aurora had experienced. She was nineteen, wasn’t see? Odd to think she knew exactly what every super needed more than they did. Or the general mass of supers, he would bet, and certainly more than he did. Moreso that she felt obligated to act on it. Unsettling to think she though she could make that choice for them and that failing to do so was failing her people, and was helming an unstable faction, and was pushing under a tight timeframe with death on the other side. He hoped she wasn’t going to leave the stage of building. But he couldn’t say these hopes were very high, which lead to a necessary question.
“How far are you willing to go?” Bolide hesitated, and picked a better one. “How far is reasonable to go?”

"I don't know yet," Aurora shook her head. "It's why I've been careful so far. For the time being, I've only been breaking up fights and interfering with the worst of the criminal activity and little else. It obviously hasn't been that effective so far, but it's a starting point and it lets me minimize the damage while I figure the rest out. What's 'reasonable' isn't important yet. It's important for me to define my own lines because even if something is 'reasonable' it still may not be something I'm personally willing to do. But this is a personal issue and something I need to figure out own my own," she sighed. "It's nothing you need to concern yourself with."
The sky changed colors in full force, filling the sky with various shades of yellow, red, and orange. The colors reflected off of many of the buildings because of the amount of glass on them. Even the rest were getting some color in the windows. The city itself was starting to light up, and the streetlights were shutting off. Despite all her worries, watching this gave her a sense of inner peace. A small smile formed on her face once more.
"This is why I try to come up here often. Everything seems so much simpler, even if it's only for a few minutes."

He would like to believe that Aurora’s personal boundaries were lower than what was reasonable. It would leave less unknown and less fear that her rash actions might be limited to ones that were at least easy to mitigate. Her recent actions - breaking up fights and the like - would alone make it easy to believe. But Aurora had already killed a person. Even after so, she was still unable to define the upper boundary of what she was willing to do. With her talk of forgoing unpowereds completely, Solomon had been expecting an extreme and concerning answer. The lack thereof was considerably worse.
He would call this an attempt damage control. Bolide was going to consider it friendly advice.
“It does concern me. A lot, actually. You’re the leader, so your actions have a lot of consequences. For one, you have the most resources so you can take the largest actions and they will be felt the farthest throughout the faction. But you also set the example for the entire group. What you do will be considered reasonable by everyone else in Pandaemonium. If you badly beat someone up, or harm a large number of unpowereds, people are going to think that’s okay.” He shifted his weight to his other foot and slipped the rest of his sandwich into his bag. He’d finish it later. “Ultimately it’s all up to you. I figure you know this already, but it never hurts to hear other people say it too. Be careful.”
Bolide exhaled through his nose. In stark contrast to the building below them, it was quite peaceful up here. Even if she was willing to kill, at least she did seem to still enjoy the calm and simple.
He glanced away from the city to Aurora, wearing another friendly smile. “Let me know if you ever need someone to bounce things off of. Even if I can’t offer any advice, sometimes it helps just to hear yourself say things out loud.”

It was bad enough that he was talking like she didn't understand how important her conclusions and actions were, even though she just explained why coming to these decisions was difficult. Obviously she understood. If she didn't, she'd be moving much differently and much less cautiously right now. There was one thing she couldn't forgive though. This was a discussion about Pandaemonium and a discussion about supers. Unpowered people had no place in it. Her smile dimmed at she looked at him out of the corner of her eye.
"What the hell do unpowered people have to do with anything?" There was a noticeable increase in her volume. "The ones in Pandaemonium are treated like anyone else, except that they can't have a room in the base. It's not like I'm going to execute them for no reason. They're my responsibility and under my protection. That's what makes figuring out how to stop them from destroying themselves and everything around them so difficult. Stop talking to me like I'm not already aware of all this and I'm not putting a great deal of thought and effort into everything. And why does everyone seem to think that I'm in desperate need of someone to talk to? I swear, all of you are worse than my therapist."
Aurora huffed, and shoved the rest of the sandwich into her mouth. Her chewing was far more forceful than it was a few minutes ago. She tried to focus on the sunrise again in an attempt to suppress her irritation. She was willing to give him the benefit of the doubt given they seemed to be on the same page so far, but recounting the questions it was difficult not to question his motives. Did everyone have so little faith in what she could accomplish? The worst part was that the nature of the question didn't make sense. He expressed how glad he was that she thought about things so thoroughly, and said that she was succeeding in getting control over Pandaemonium even if it was slow, but somehow he didn't think that she knew the weight of her position? That she wasn't aware that her actions would dictate the actions of Pandaemonium itself? It didn't make sense. She chugged the last of her milk while she mulled it all over in her head then turned to face him.
"Were you lying to me?"
As much as she hated being vague, it was necessary in this case. Aurora didn't want to help him answer. It increased the chance that his answer would be genuine and decreased the odds that this would be bothering her later.

Solomon had been told Aurora was paranoid. He’d been working accordingly; he’d planned out his story and details for it a ways in advance, lining up paperwork and real life occurrences, be them actual or forged, to support it. If Aurora asked where his hometown was, he’d have an answer. All of the consequences of his work that Bolide had offered would be there as well, as he’d drawn directly from what was already happening there. Brandon Porter’s name could even be found scattered about the appropriate documents, proving he had helped set up that demonstration two years ago or that he aided in that fundraiser. This was the first time he’d really seen it in practice, however. That he’d gone this long without an incident was fairly astonishing, and he doubted this would be a particularly difficult one to smooth over. Still, the complete flip from a friendly conversation to vague accusations of lying in a matter of seconds caught him by surprise.
Thankfully surprised anger was the response to this accusation, and Bolide’s first response was several moments of staring blankly at Aurora, trying to confirm that that was indeed what she just said. He muttered a couple of things under his breath as words began to return to him, head down, arms crossed and brow furrowed. Letting out a deep, aggravated breath, he looked Aurora in the eye.
Bolide decided to start with the minor offense before it got lost in the rest. “Alright, first off, the unpowereds were just an example. I’m not trying to suggest they’re not your responsibility, or that you’re not thinking about them, or even that you’re causing them any harm. I’m not trying to suggest anything about them. What you think of unpowereds is your business, and is in fact unrelated to this conversation.”
Mild irritation grew into actual insult, and with it volume. Bolide rubbed his helmet where the bridge of his nose would be and said each word carefully in spite of his anger, because damn it he wasn’t about to be misunderstood twice in a row. “Second, I just said that I appreciated you were thinking about all this stuff. I also just said that I knew you already knew what I was going to say. Why wouldn’t you? It’s the obvious conclusion and you’re not stupid. It’s called giving assurance that I think what you’re doing is the right thing. I’m telling you I agree with you. I said it like I did because I think it’s seriously important, but just saying that without saying why or just flatly agreeing makes it sound like it’s some off-handed remark and that’s not what it was at all. I don’t lie, Aurora, and I don’t say what I don’t mean. I wasn’t fluffing your feathers or some bullshit like that, I meant it and I don’t like you throwing my compliments back in my face. How about you listen to what I’m saying before you go jumping to conclusions and accusing me of lying?” He said, nearly shouting. He assumed that was what Aurora meant by ‘lying’, at least. It was the only thing that really made sense. With that out and dealt with, he dropped down to an angry huff. “Or at least ask for a bit of clarification first. I shouldn’t have to be playing guilty until proven innocent.”
His grumble picked back up in volume and articulation as he moved to the next topic. “And jeeze, I was just offering it to you. Talking stuff out helps me a lot so I was just saying I was available to try to be helpful, because this is big stuff you’re dealing with and it’s damn tough. But look, if you’ve got it covered, you’ve got it covered. If you don’t want to, just say you don’t want to. I’m not trying to force anything on you or even try to tell you what you should be doing. No need to go jumping down my throat.”
Bolide turned back to the city, shoulders tight and angry. But, he didn’t see a lot of reason to remain angry at Aurora for long. She was stressed and under a lot of pressure, and he’d said everything he wanted to say. Mistakes happened and he couldn’t really blame her. He let himself relax, and in doing so, something about the last thing she’d said caught him as odd.
“What do you mean, ‘all of you’?” He asked slowly. “Something happen?”

Aurora met his gaze, or at least tried to look on the spot on his helmet she figured his eyes were behind. Not once did she waver despite the anger and volume. She took in every word carefully, lining them up with everything else he said today and then everything he said up until this point. Anger was easy to fake, especially when someone's face was hidden. Be a little loud and throw in some indignant words and a lot of people would believe it. She would not let herself be fooled by false anger. It was all the more important here because if he was lying it was working. That was terrifying on its own. She understood where her heart was going, and how she was feeling about him. Already she wanted to believe that everything he was saying was completely true and that she had no reason to doubt it. That she was being as unreasonable as he was claiming for doubting him at all. It was all the more reason to push past those feelings and scrutinize his words even more.
In the end, she couldn't find too many things wrong with his rant. The one thing she did find made her unable to relax. Her shoulders stayed tense, even after her gaze returned to the sunrise. Her fingers dug into the milk carton she was holding, denting it. He was angry that she didn't blindly accept his compliments. Aurora hadn't even noticed it until he said something. Before it sounded more like he was stating facts, but he was trying to make her feel good about herself and got angry when it didn't work. It suggested that he was trying something. It almost worked too, which gave her pause. She wasn't sure how to feel about this. Part of her still wanted to brush it aside like it was nothing, but she couldn't do that could she? She had to stay vigilant. There was no reason to cut him off entirely, she just had to make sure she wasn't being manipulated somehow.
"I'll hold you do that." Her voice was quieter and stern, her gaze focused on the sunrise still. "People try to lie to me often. Sometimes it works for the short term, but never for long. I'll catch the contradictions eventually." She stopped, intending to leave it there until she realized it might be misleading given his last question. "...That was not what I was referring to though. Lots of people have told me I can talk to them, like I need it or don't already know. It's annoying."

He watched Aurora carefully out of the corner of his eye. Her demeanor seemed to have changed, but it seemed to have worked well enough. As well as he could hope anyway. He would have to be more careful in the future, especially on this topic. Aurora was fine and knew what she was doing, and questioning that was nothing but idiocy, he noted. Insinuating anything less than maximum effort or thought was a faux pas in any sense that it could possibly be inferred. Bolide would try not to make the same mistake again.
There seemed to have been another part to his slip. She wanted help with some things, such as her building projects, but even offering it for others would upset her. What exactly caused the different reactions, however, he wasn't quite sure. Things she wasn’t broadcasting the need for, perhaps? That seemed most likely presently, but he also suspected subjects that made her seem like she, personally, needed help, or issues she actually did need help with but didn’t want to admit. He wasn’t about to go testing it, of course, but he’d keep it in mind if he misstepped again.
Solomon also noted from previously that Aurora had a therapist. That poor soul.
“Fair enough.” He said, pulling his under mask back over his nose. “My word’s my honour, so I can’t say it sits really well with me to have what I say scrutinized, but I understand why you’d do that and I don’t have any right to ask for some kind of special treatment from you. I’ll try to not let it bother me.”
And he would have to be cautious, if she was going to start keeping a sharp eye out. He couldn’t say right now how much she’d be doing before, but regardless of if she was stepping up her game, he would be his. It was possible he’d be able to fill in holes as they arose, but too many would be suspicious. Until he fully earned her trust, he was playing a game where a single misplaced detail could set him far back. A single misfortune could end the facade in its entirety. It would likely be best for both of them if he didn’t fail.
It was interesting to hear he wasn’t the first person to offer to listen to Aurora should she want it. Not unexpected, considering the number of people who hung around her, but notable to hear enough people had offered that she was getting annoyed. It felt a little reaffirming, honestly. He wasn’t the only one seeing that she could probably stand to talk out some of her ideas and problems with someone. Being direct about it, however - pitying her as it almost made it sound, clearly wasn’t the way to go about it.
“Glad to hear you’re good there and what you’re doing already works.” Bolide said with a shrug. As he’d said, it was an offer. If she wasn’t going to take it, that was fine.

The indignation was gone, though he clearly wasn't happy with the situation still. Was it because it wasn't working, or because he couldn't argue against what she said? It was difficult to argue against fact. She couldn't blame him for it. There wasn't much she could say to it either. The conversation turned awkward and disappointing, but she couldn't pretend like nothing happened. Her voice was quiet and a little despondent.
"You just have to prove I'm worrying about nothing right?"

He just had to prove to a suspicious faction leader who appeared to be inclined to assume the worst first and was the proud owner of a fine-toothed detail comb that he was a person who did not exist and who was working for the opposite interests of his actual mission. Simple indeed. Bolide’s voice grew considerably more relaxed, and even a bit upbeat.
“Right, and it’s a little hard to disprove the truth. I shouldn’t have anything to worry about either.”
Optimistic or not, he didn’t want to leave the conversation on that. Bolide adjusted the bag in his hands and shifted his weight like he was considering departing.
“I got word that there’s a meeting between two of the companies I’m keeping a close eye on this morning, so I have to head out there,” he pulled out his phone to check the time, “soon to gather as much information from that as I can. From there, I’m trying to figure out how to optimise my day off. What are you doing today?”

Part of Aurora was happy to have a change in subject, part of her wanted him to leave for now. As uncomfortable as it was, she wasn't inclined to make him leave. She sighed and rubbed her forehead as she recounted what she intended to do that day. It wasn't going to be a very exciting day.
"First I need to go visit several corporate executives with Limen to clean up her mess. Considering the sheer number of them, I suspect that'll take most of the morning, if not a good chunk of the afternoon too. Then I need to do a lot more research into some engineering challenges, mostly on how I should go about restoring the docks. I want to look at some of the smaller islands not too far from the city and see what I can do with them, and see if it's feasible to build some bridges to them. If not, I'll need to look into what's necessary to build, run, and maintain some ships, as well as to how large an area I can absorb at once with my power now as that will be the upper limit on how big a ship I can make easily. I suspect I could absorb the entirety of one of the mansions on Malachite Isle now, but I need to test it to make sure. As much as I'd love to use the mayor's house to test it after all the stunts he's been pulling lately, I make a point of not attacking peoples' homes for any reason," Aurora sighed again. "I'll just use one of the destroyed buildings downtown instead. And of course, I need to leave in time for the inevitable horde of people wanting to bother me about whatever stupid shit they want. I'd offer to help with your mission, but I don't think I'd be very useful for stealthily gathering information."

It was probably for the best Aurora wasn’t coming along, and not just because her listening in to an unpowered business meeting was likely to be quite the awkward conversation. He’d be going, of course, but he wasn’t expecting to get anything more than corporate hoopla and stiff legs from two prideful executives and their respective entourages who couldn’t agree which end to crack their egg on. He was planning on using the time to double check some of Bolide’s paperwork and figure out the cleanest way to get more of the rest. Since he was spending his day here for Aurora, he turned to look for something in her day that might let him directly help her, but hers seemed to be mostly solo matters as well. He’d offer what he could.
“I could see about picking up some research material on the way back from my business, if you would like. And here.” Bolide pulled his bag from over his shoulder, and after a brief time of rustling, pulled out one of the thin strips of cloth and a pen. After a couple of shakes and a few scribbles, he managed to get a string of numbers on the cloth. He held it out to Aurora. “This is my number. I imagine you have to deal with a lot of it yourself, but if there’s any shit that’s possible to pass off, feel free to send it my way so you can get back to more important things. I could also catch up with you with the execs later if you wanted an extra hand, but I doubt I’d be more help than another person with powers.”
