It was harder to find a good place to chat than it was to contact the person he wanted to chat with. One of the few pros of being an ex-Bulwark was he knew probably a bit too much about the best ways to contact the other Bulwarks. The simplest was the flip phone he’d gotten just before leaving the Bulwarks, actually, and had never really gotten rid of. Blue Jay rang up Carl, asked if he could borrow a second of his time, and, once said time rolled around, headed out to the given place. Blue Jay had picked a skyscraper in the downtown area. It was a handful of blocks south of the main battlefield but was in pretty good shape, all things considering. Sure, most of the windows had been blasted out, and the lower levels had a couple of good holes in them, and the place had already been thoroughly looted and was gaining a vibrant collection of graffiti, but it was still standing. That was more than could be said about the majority of the surrounding buildings. It was the tallest thing on the surrounding few blocks by a good couple of floors, making it easy to spot but a little out of most people’s ways. Supers didn’t have a lot of reason to be there and he could probably scare off the majority of ‘lost’ teenagers just by being there. The sun was going through the motions of setting when Blue Jay appeared on the rooftop. A full moon and a cloudless sky promised a decently bright night to replace it, albeit a cold one by the light frost that covered the handful of metal surfaces scattered across the roof. One such, a thin metal railing, ran along the upper edge of the roof and around a radio antenna that’d stopped working when the building’s power was cut. For lack of good air conditioning units, Blue Jay was using the railing as a seat. After his mostly empty gym bag was dropped on the concrete roof behind him, there was little to do but zone out to the distant light of cars and wait. Carl

Even if Carl disagreed with exact intended purpose of the phones, he kept one on him at all times. It was a relatively reliable means of learning about criminal activity. And after the majority of the other Bulwarks seemed to have decided to take an unannounced vacation at the same time, Carl found himself in need of something at least somewhat reliable. Luckily, most of the Pandaemonium activity seemed to have come to a stop as well. The young Bulwark suspected it had something to do with the base that they had apparently acquired recently, and he certainly wasn't going to complain. Even with the lack of crime, he hadn't been expecting to get a call that didn't inherently have anything to do with crime.
Blue Jay was an oddity in Carl's eyes. He hadn't ever dealt with a Bulwark deserter who decided to still be of use. Part of the young boy felt that he should receive the same treatment as any other villain, especially after he confirmed that by joining Pandaemonium. The other, more rational part of him was aware that any ally was a useful ally, and one that should be utilized. Blue Jay's loyalties were questionable at best, but at least he was still around. Carl - no, the Emerald City branch of Bulwarks - was in dire straits and could use all the help offered. Which was why, despite his misgivings with the situation, he decided to hear out whatever Blue Jay wanted.
Carl didn't make the other super wait long. As he made his appearance on the roof of the designated building (one of the next few that Carl was intending on trying to help fix, as it turned out), he put off the air of someone who had better things to do. Whether that was true or not had yet to be decided, though. "Well?" he asked impatiently

Blue Jay’s head popped up and out of the off-topic train of thought it’d wandered into upon the arrival of the other super.
“Well,” Blue Jay began excitedly, ignoring Carl’s impatient tone for the reason that he was content to have the Bulwark’s time at all, “I want to sponsor you for a new charity. Or, I guess a little more accurately, I need a face for a charity I want to start so I was wondering if I could do the thing and you could take all the credit.”
He picked his legs up over the railing and turned around to face Carl, his voice picking up speed and interest as he got into the topic. “Basically, I want to help support the every day people who’re financially hurt by supers. I don’t think it’s really reasonable for me to try provide immediate support, like as soon as the incident happens - I thought about it and couldn’t come up with anything I could do - but I don’t think it’s impossible to help.” He trailed off, wondering how to explain this. “So when debts go unpaid for long enough, banks’ll often sell these loans out to other people for fractions of what the dept actually is in an attempt to recoup some of the loss, right? If someone gets hurt due to a super fight or has to pay to replace a house or a car that was wrecked and can’t afford to pay back the debt, it’d be really easy to just buy it and drop it.” He made a dismissive gesture with his hands to accentuate his point.
“But that’s just phase one.” He continued leadingly, pointing up. “When large companies take a big hit, oftentimes they’ll reduce workers or do other things at the lower levels in the company like cut benefits to recoup the costs, right? The solution, I think, is easy; I want to provide the affected people with an extra paycheck every month, dependent on how much they’re still making, benefits included, to assure they’re still getting a baseline amount. I want to give people who’re unemployed an assured income and people who get a drop a little extra so they feel less of a change.” He said cheerfully, and again picked up speed. “See and this’ll help the big companies recover faster too, because it’ll help keep lower income workers working and buying stuff and that’ll help keep the economy running.
“The problem is I’m just some random nineteen year old college student. People like me aren’t exactly known for having a lot of money, so it’d be really weird if I was publicly leading a charity that was throwing out millions of dollars but wasn’t doing any fundraising. People would probably consider that suspicious. But you’re already doing stuff like that, right? Your civilian identity, I mean. It wouldn’t raise as many eyebrows if the wealthy business owner and his private investors were the ones running the show. I’ve got a couple of other ideas for work around, but having you be the face is the easiest. And that’s all I’d need, you to be the public face - I’ll take care of finding the people, getting the funds, and distributing them. I mean if you want to do more, I’d love the help, but I’ve got the rest covered. I think.”
Blue Jay paused, wondering if he was correctly selling his idea. The trick was to make it sound like it was really in the other person’s favor, right? Even though he was basically asking a favor of Carl and he didn’t know enough of the Bulwark to know how much he’d actually benefit. For now, though, he decided to stop there for questions and concerns, and waited expectantly for the other super’s response.

Carl had been wondering what sort of harebrained scheme would prompt a Pandaemonium to contact a Bulwark for help. He was surprised by the prospect itself, but it definitely seemed the proper level of harebrained. He couldn't help but wonder how much Blue Jay knew of charities in the first place. There were other questions that actually needed asked, though.
"It's certainly an... interesting proposition," Carl said after a few long moments of thought. "Alright, you have my attention, Blue Jay. I'll definitely consider it. For now, though; how are you expecting to get your funding? It's clear that you don't seem to have it out of costume. Do you have a wealthy backer in the gang or something?"

It was weird hearing someone he knew to be in his mid-teens talking like a formal businessman, but Blue Jay guessed that was technically what Carl was. He was just glad the young businessman was humoring him for a second.
“Two ways, mostly.” Blue Jay picked up again cheerfully. “First, I’m going to take money from the largest companies and richest people in the city. I’d focus on ones that benefit from super destruction, such as building companies, or ones that have particularly bad business practices. It’d probably be a bit hard if I was doing it myself, but I doubt it’ll be difficult to convince some of the other Pandaemoniums to help me out. We’d keep destruction to a minimum, obviously, and really prioritize not hurting anyone. If other supers showed up I’d probably just leave and come back later.
“So then we’d give some of that money to the workers of that company because they’d probably take the hit and that’s the point of the charity. The amount these businesses make in profit compared to how much it actually costs to do their thing is huge, and it’s not like we’ll be completely paying for the employees or anything, just closing that difference. My estimations say we’d have a lot left over even after helping the employees of the business we steal from to give to other people.
“Then, I want to take advantage of the stock market. From being a part of Pandaemonium and my own movements, I’m going to have some knowledge of company finances in advance. When a company gets their building knocked over or their vault behind their picture safe cleaned out, their stocks drop. My plan is to buy a bunch of stocks while the price is low. Since their workers are basically getting supplements from us, they can maintain the same level of output while doing the lowering benefits and wages tactic to make up the costs, and before long they’ll be back to where they were before. Their stock values will rise back up with them, and I’ll sell when they’re normal again. So I’ll be my own wealthy backer.” He concluded.

At first, Carl thought Blue Jay was joking. As the joke went on, though, and Jay's voice never wavered from the cheerful tone, Carl started to simply hope that he was only joking. It wasn't long before he lost his hope and he was simply waiting for the former Bulwark to finish his presentation. Admittedly, the plan sounded more thought out than the context would suggest. As far as he could tell on first assumptions, it might even work. However, it was still a stupid plan so Carl didn't bother to actually concern himself over the finer details.
"No," he said bluntly, his expression flat under his mask. "The only reason I'm not trying to fight you for suggesting that right now is because it's pretty clear your heart is in the right place, at least. I mean, you do realize that you're informing a Bulwark - the sole Bulwark in the city for all intents and purposes, so far as I can tell - that you're intending to go and steal from the unpowered people in the city, yes?"
He paused and looked out over the city he was trying to help rebuild. It was the first time he'd ever tried to help a branch of the Bulwarks in such dire straits, and now it seemed like he was all alone in trying to keep Emerald City in one piece. Blue Jay was clearly wanting to, but how much could be expected of a villain in that regard? Carl hadn't even expected to be in the city for as long as he already had been, but now it was seeming like it would be an indefinite stay. He couldn't just leave people to whatever fate was decided by the supers who would remain, and even if more heroes emerged, somebody would have to show them the ropes and that it's a fight worth fighting.
"I was working on a project of my own," he sighed finally without turning back to face Blue Jay. "It's starting to look less and less like it will be needed, though, so I can afford to fund your idea instead. I can't say if you'll be receiving the same amount as you would otherwise, but at least this way you won't be causing the very problem that you're hoping to solve. If you can find others who would be willing to assist, though, that would be appreciated."
He turned back to Blue Jay and clasped his hands behind his back. "Now then, since I'm going to be fully involved in this, let's talk distribution. It's your project, your idea, so I won't take over everything. That being said, I hope your idea for getting the desperate the money that they need isn't as illegal as how you were intending on obtaining said money in the first place, yes?"

Blue Jay turned and blinked at Carl. “You’d actually fund me?” He shook his head of the surprise and to situate the idea, his gaze ending up back over the city. “No, it’ll probably be enough. I’m not trying to help every single person who needs it right away, and I was planning on ways to try to grow the money in order to expand the scope of the project and move away from stealing. Plus real funding would just make everything a lot simpler.”
Would Carl have really jumped into battle, right here, right now if he’d done a poorer job of explaining it was for the good of the unpowereds? He hadn’t even done anything yet. Was just suggesting something - which wasn’t all that bad compared to a lot of stuff he’d seen supers do - worth coming to blows over for Carl? But then also, what would that even accomplish? Say Carl did defeat him here; that wouldn’t stop him from going through with his plan, it’d just mean he’d be sore and a couple ruined buildings might be a little more ruined. Blue Jay had pretty good reason to believe Carl wouldn’t be able to permanently stop him either. Maybe he was just talking grumpy because he was feeling the isolation of being a Bulwark. Blue Jay could relate to that.
“I thought it was a little silly, telling a Bulwark a plan that wasn’t exactly legal, but I figured if it was a problem you were just going to show up anyway. Wouldn’t hurt explaining my reasoning to you even if you do decide to try to stop me.” He said, scratching his cheek with his index finger.
He turned back to Carl as he got back on track. “In order to do this, we’d need access to people’s personal finances, as well as information on what benefits companies are giving their different employees so as to know who needs what. The second’s a little hard to get, but that first one’s not really publicly available. If I want those,” he paused, anticipating Carl’s response considering his last. But he was already in this deep, might as well finish it out. “I’ll have to steal them. Tax records are probably what I’d go for. I wouldn’t be taking anything, of course; no reason to. I’d make digital copies. By myself, I can probably get into a government building and onto one of their computers without anyone noticing. There’re people in Pandaemonium who can make software that’ll let me into computers and take what I need, so I wouldn’t need to break anything or hurt anyone. I doubt anyone would notice I’d even been there. Minus security camera footage.
“Then, I’d get some of the Pandaemonium members to help me out,” probably with favors or cash, “and we’d go through and math out everything. I’m pretty good at stuff like that and I should be able to get the process down to be quick. I’ll try to find someone to make a computer program to do it for me for when it starts getting bigger, too. Actually getting money to people, though, would just be writing checks and sending them in the mail.”

For once, Carl actually found himself grateful of the mask that he wore. If it wasn't there, covering his face, he was convinced the disappointment he was feeling would radiate out around him. He was tempted to make it clear just how irritated he was anyway, but Blue Jay was trying to do some good and that was to be encouraged. If not, he'd feel as though he shouldn't bother and that wasn't what Carl wanted at all. Even if he was going about it all the wrong ways. Blue Jay just needed encouragement that guided him towards the right decisions.
"Well, at least nobody is going to get physically hurt from that," Carl grumbled. Perfect. Very much what was needed. Clearly his leadership skills were paying off. "Are there even any other Pandaemoniums who would help you that wouldn't be trying to take their own cut of the money?" It was a perfectly innocent question, not at all biased and accusatory. If Blue Jay wanted to take that the wrong way, maybe he shouldn't have allied himself with criminal scum.
"Okay, so you have funding and a plan for distribution. You have a face for your charity. What's your next step?" He waited a few seconds before following up with his next thought. "How much research into this have you done? Do you know what all you need to do?"

Blue Jay nodded, ignoring Carl’s tone for the face value of his words. “Yeah, I don’t want anyone to get physically hurt from this. Especially not any innocents, but anyone working for me as well. If things are getting dangerous or someone’s getting reckless, I’m not going to just sit back and watch. This isn’t worth getting someone injured over. And, honestly, I’m expecting if I have to steal money that I’m going to have to share with the people I do it with. Some people in Pandaland will seriously just do it for the thrill, but not a lot, and they’re usually chaotic enough that I don’t think I can fully rely on them for what I need. Whoever I ask, I’m going to make it pretty clear that most of the money is going to me. They might change their mind later, but I mean, there’s not a lot of supers who can argue with me.” He concluded with a shrug.
Reading Carl was proving to not be the easiest of tasks. He didn’t seem like he really approved of a lot of Blue Jay’s suggested methodology, but continued to sprinkle in little suggestions that he was still willing to help out. He wasn’t completely sure if he’d sold Carl on the idea, but he was going to be optimistic and assume he had and was grinning under his mask because of it. He began lightly kicking his legs.
“Paperwork. Paperwork’s next.” He said more cheerfully than the subject would normally call for. “I’ve got most of it filled out - I was basically just waiting for your approval and signature to get it pending. Which,” he moved his head to the side, considering, “might take a little while. But I’ll take care of all that. I can keep you updated as things go through if you’d like, or I can just bother you when I need you for something.
“Speaking of which,” He reached down and unzipped his bag with one hand, keeping himself steady on the railing with the other. After pulling out a small packet of paper, he straightened and held it out to Carl. “This is the sheet to appoint a director and the one thing I need from you. If it comes back signed in blood I won’t be disappointed.” He chuckled.

Carl couldn't help but chuckle dryly. "What, you don't expect much honor amongst thieves?" he asked, his words just loud enough to be heard. "How unexpected from the Rogue-Bulwark-turned-Pandaemonium. I'd say it's almost like you don't share the same ideals as many of your newfound comrades. What a surprising, completely unpredictable turn of events." Did Blue Jay deserve to have Carl's disappointment vented at him? Considering how it was his poor choices that had caused the younger super's disappointment, the answer was yes. Besides, it wasn't as though Carl was being as petty about the situation as he could be. There was absolutely no reason for him to feel bad about what he was doing.
However, personal feelings aside, it technically was a business meeting. A strange one, but that didn't change the facts of the situation. As such, despite his irritation, Carl did his best to quickly compose himself and act professional.
"Alright," he said with a nod, accepting the papers presented to him. "I suppose that proves you've done a fair bit of preparation. I'll get this back to you as soon as I can. As for updates, I wouldn't mind being kept up to date, but the less I know about your targets, the better. If I hear tell of a crime taking place before it does, I'm obligated to try my best to stop it. Keep that in mind."
The comment about signing the packet in blood was intentionally not remarked upon. The only implied meaning that made sense to Carl was that it was a joke about it being akin to making a deal with the devil. The only person who seemed to fit the part of Satan was Blue Jay. If he wanted to call himself the devil, that was fine, if a bit confusing. Even if Carl didn't approve of his choices, he doubted that the older super shared his opinions. The thought that he was making a comparison between himself and the devil was strange and didn't make sense. Carl wondered if he was missing something important, or if he was just over thinking it. Either way, though, it was best not to comment.

Carl’s mutterings were not lost on Blue Jay. He couldn’t help but chuckle as well, albeit with irony and a bit of sadness. It was completely true; he didn’t really fit in with his new comrades, and his comrades weren’t exactly what he’d consider the most moral people in the world. But that just meant nothing had really changed, had it? He had to worry about being stabbed in the back now, but at least this knife wasn’t cloaked in a glowing light of justice. It wasn’t easy to get the help he needed, but it was certainly easier - a promise of cash or destruction would get him at least a few hands. A good number of people had an automatic hostility against him because of his background, but he could normally get them off his back by a bluff with the sword on his. The farthest he’d had to go was breaking a guy’s nose in front of a bunch of his friends. People had pretty well left him alone after that.
“Hey, do you know why they called me the Rogue Bulwark?” He asked curiously, just loud enough to make sure Carl could hear. He wasn’t sure how informed Carl was about the internal politics of this branch of the Bulwarks before he came, and as far as he was concerned, deserved to know if he didn’t.
The papers were passed off to the right person and he could mark another task off his mental checklist. It always felt nice to do that. “Wouldn’t’ve come to you if I hadn’t. I make myself look like an idiot enough without being completely unprepared.” He chuckled, more earnestly. “Thanks, I’ll give you periodic updates with, uh, relevant information, then.”
Carl’s last statement had hit him with that same dull biting feeling he got when a Pandaemonium chucked an insult, doubt, or threat his way. He’d wanted to immediately respond in kind, but had stopped himself. It wasn’t quite the same, he’d reminded himself, though it did need to be addressed. How exactly to go about it, however, gave him pause. He didn’t look at the Bulwark as he began slowly, but out at the city. His voice had a seriousness it hadn’t before. “Carl, I know we’re in different factions now. The two that seem to hate each other’s guts the most at that, but I want to make something clear. I’m not interested in fighting you. All it’d be is the possibility of lots of damage for not much gain, right? If you do show up somewhere and don’t like what I’m doing - and this holds true for anything, not just stuff related to this - just say hello and,” Blue Jay shrugged, “I’ll stop for a second so that maybe we can talk it out.”

Carl considered the question asked. Did he want to reveal that he knew full well why Blue Jay was called that? Few people enjoyed hearing that others knew more about them than they normally should. And, unfortunately, Carl had done a fair amount of research on the other Bulwarks after arriving in Emerald City. Still, he supposed whatever answer he gave was likely to lead to the same explanation. It wasn't something worth lying over.
"You assisted known villains in certain scenarios," he stated coolly. "However, you also fought against those same villains in other instances, so I assume it wasn't because of any alliance or agreement with them. Especially when I take into account that you clearly had no issues with leaving the Bulwarks, or that you really gained nothing by staying. Especially considering how you were seen as a traitor."
He doubted Blue Jay did anything villainous without good reason. Just judging by the current meeting, it didn't seem to fit the older super. He planned on starting a charity to help those negatively affected by supers and the damage they caused, and went to a potential enemy for help doing so. Somebody that keen on helping people wasn't likely to do something as selfish and short sighted as rob a bank without a redeeming reason. It possibly wasn't a good enough reason to justify it, but he probably had some reason.
"Much appreciated," Carl said, trying his best to focus on the business at hand. "I'll do the same; should anything potentially important happen, such as spare funds opening up for use or the exact opposite, I'll keep you informed. If everything goes smoothly, I'd imagine it won't take long before you hear good news from me in that regard." He was already planning out fundraisers, for when he got feedback about how the charity is operating.
His planning was interrupted by Blue Jay, and it took until the end of the statement before he understood what it was addressing. He let a few seconds pass in silence before he finally sighed. "You talk as though I don't understand that. I have as much interest in fighting you as I would destroying the building we're standing on. If it's absolutely necessary, I won't hold back, but it's not as though it's absolutely necessary. I may speak aggressively, but if I had any real doubts about you, you wouldn't know my name and I wouldn't be here. I understand that you're a good person at heart. Possibly misguided, but good. Don't overthink it."

“That’s the contextless overview that got me the title.” Blue Jay sighed. He was just glad Carl wasn’t jumping to arms about it and was looking somewhat critically at the situation - maybe he’d hear him out. He’d put it out there regardless, if only out of spite for the misinformation.
“So the first big one was I helped Aurora and Dullahan rob a bank. See, by the time the Bulwarks showed up, they’d already robbed the thing and were driving at high speeds down a highway. If the car had crashed - hell, if the wrong attack had been fired at the wrong part of the road - civilians could’ve been caught up in it. Peoples’ lives mean a lot more to me than however much money they had, so I tried to defend the car until it was out of a populated area. This meant fighting off another Bulwark and helping two Pandaemoniums, but no one died that day.
“Then there was the time I brought a Keeper back to the Bulwark HQ. Their name’s Unhallow. They’d been injured in a fight I’d been part of earlier that day - both their arms were broken and they were bleeding from the bite wounds that did it. They were walking back to the Keeper Sanctum by themself in that condition because no one had come to help them after the fight. There’d even been another Keeper there and the asshole hadn’t helped. I had to do something, right? Their power meant we had to go on foot, and the only place we could get help that wouldn’t arrest us was the Bulwark HQ.
“I don’t know how much this has circulated, but before I joined Pandaemonium, there was a time I helped Aurora escape the police because they shot at us and she took a bullet for me. I’ve also fought other Bulwarks on a few occasions because our morals conflicted and one of us didn’t agree with what the other was doing. That run-in with Rainfall and Nemesis is a good example.
“The last one that got held over my head was the time I helped stop a cargo train. An unknown super and I halted the thing, and three Bulwarks showed up. Before anyone asked me what I was doing or bothered checking what was even in the train, they called me a traitor and attacked me. The train was later reportedly carrying weapons and they went and sent it on its way, but even though I never attacked back, the incident was deemed me betraying the Bulwark once again. People were talking about kicking me out after that one.”
Blue Jay uncrossed his arms to grab the railing on either side of him and turned to Carl. His edge of bitterness dispersed, and his tone returned to a neutral muse. “What I’m saying is don’t expect a Bulwark’s word to be the whole picture. The people there like to see the world in black and white, probably because it’s safe and it’s damn hard to perfectly uphold a code of justice and herohood without it, but sometimes situations aren’t as cut and dry as that. Sometimes people have morally grey situations dropped on them and they have to make tough decisions. Some people, like me, are just really good at stumbling into them.” He chuckled. “I don’t think it makes them a bad person, though, and I don’t think it’s fair to chastise them for it. But I’m kinda biased on the topic. Take it as you like.” He said cheerfully.
Blue Jay nodded to Carl’s plan of information. He’d keep his eye and ear out, and would hope for the best.
The meeting seemed to be winding to a close, and a good one at that. He’d honestly been doing this with the expectation that he’d have a very small chance at success, but somehow Carl’d ended up agreeing. He’d even agreed to funding the idea. Blue Jay turned around and hopped off the railing, picking up and swinging his bag over his shoulder, in high spirits. Carl’s final statement only increased it further.
It stopped him in his tracks, eyes widened in surprise. Maybe it was just because he was getting an oversaturation of Aurora’s abrasive nature lately, but that was among the nicest things someone had told him in quite a while. Grin larger than before, he paced the short distance towards the other super.
“Aw, Carl,” Personal space tossed aside, Blue Jay attempted to reach an arm around Carl’s shoulder for a half-side hug. “This is why I was on your side to lead the Bulwarks, you know?”

Unsurprisingly, it would seem to Carl that he was right. Blue Jay simply didn't seem the criminal type. The only scenario he hadn't given a reason for his actions was the train, but the pattern was clear. He tried to help people in need, other Bulwarks took offense. Presumably, that pattern seemed likely to be a cause of his abandonment of the faction. He certainly seemed bothered enough by it for that to be the case. Carl couldn't think of any other possible reasons that he knew of, at least. He wondered if he would've done the same, had he been in any location long enough for similar problems to have had a chance to arise.
"Don't worry about it too much," he said indifferently. "I've not heard word of other Bulwarks doing much of anything here lately, and I've not had time to waste at the HQ. I doubt I'll be hearing a Bulwark's thoughts on anything any time soon. It would seem heroes are a dying breed, at least in this city." As for his thoughts on if Blue Jay deserved the title he had been given or not, it was probably wise to carefully consider it at a later time. He didn't want a personal bias to cloud his judgment too much.
Still, he couldn't just ignore the explanations given to him for the time being. "You didn't do anything wrong," he said, flatly and quietly. "You made the decision that helped people. That's what being a hero is all about. And in that regard, it really is black and white. So good job."
The unexpected approach and attempted hug was not met with similar enthusiasm, though. Carl sighed. "Don't push your luck, Blue Jay," he said irritably. This was a business meeting. That alone meant that a certain level of professionalism was required, and anything short of that was insulting to the other party. Surely the older super was aware of that, at least to a degree.

Blue Jay stared blankly at Carl, like his face couldn’t quite decide which expression to put on. On one hand, he respected the Bulwark for listening and was thankful he was willing, but the reassurance that he was doing a good job was lost on him. The issue wasn’t that he’d wanted the approval of the other heroes. He really didn’t care what they thought about him, even when it may’ve done him a bit of good when he’d first started out. If he needed people’s approval, he wouldn’t have put on the mask that made him a menace in the eyes of civilians and the police. The issue was they didn’t keep these thoughts to themselves or deal with them in the ways normal, friendly people did, they villainized him and attacked him without good reason. Besides their own ideologies, but did anyone ever bother to sit down and chat with him about why actions were or were not moral before they shouted him down as a traitor? He was the one who decided what was on the correct side when he stepped into a fight, and he was the one who doubted himself later that night while he was failing to fall asleep. It was his own damn business and no one would let him have it.
He was also trying not to laugh after being formally told ‘good job’ by a teenager.
“Glad you’ve got it figured out.” Blue Jay still chuckled, though not actually at Carl. “Finding that black and white was one thing I never did manage. I tried those first couple of months I was a hero - I think because people told me I should try for that hero code or whatever - but hard set rules lasted about as long as it took to put them in context. It got me into more trouble than just about anything else I’ve attempted.” He rubbed the back of his head embarrassedly. “I used to be that hero who jumped in whenever I saw conflict and joined whichever side I thought was the ‘good guys’ or against the ones hurting the civilians. I’m just glad the worst I had to worry about back then was knocking down a building wall.”
Blue Jay shook himself from his memories and the bit of silence he’d fallen into, and perked up again. “Sorry, I’m rambling.” He chuckled. “It’s like you say, heroes really are a dying breed. It’s nice to talk to a real one again.”
Whether the lack of interaction with other Bulwarks for the super was a bad thing or a blessing in disguise, Blue Jay couldn’t say. He just hoped Carl was getting enough help with whatever he was doing. He probably could’ve lasted longer as a Bulwark if the faction was smaller, but what was the point of a faction title if it essentially amounted to being an unaligned with enemies who hate you just for the name?
“I’ve never had any luck to begin with.” Blue Jay retorted cheerfully. But he took the hint, even if he didn’t fully approve of it, and a hug became a hard slap on the back. Carl could handle being run over by an armoured car, so he could handle a super-powered back slap. “C’mon, you won’t be able to bring good to the city if you can’t take a little gratitude.”
