Well his shift had ended early today and he still had daylight to burn before his plans for the night so instead of rushing home to practice and brush up on his skills he opted instead for a different expression and use of his skills. It had been a good tip day anyways, so he was going to enjoy it. It was nice to blow off some steam now and then and just chill out. And so Alex found himself at the arcade in the mall. Specifically at the newest dance machine that they had just gotten in. It had quickly become his favorite attraction at the arcade.
His feet moved quickly and precisely, matching the arrows on the screen as he copied their patterns. Though unlike the player next to him who seemed to be focusing intently on what was coming up, just moving his feet as rapidly as possible Alex was moving his hips and arms with the music that the machine produced. They called it a dancing game for a reason, and he was showing off not just his skill, but his composure, and rhythm. One might think that he had played this game a million times by now, but that was ridiculous.
It had only been hundreds.
After a few matches and being shown up time and time again the player next to Alex departed, having exhausted their stamina as well as their change pocket. Alex bid them a cheerful farewell as he produced another quarter from his pocket, sliding it in to continue into a new round.

Saffron hummed lightly to herself as she walked through the mall. It was later in the afternoon, and a bit crowded, but she didn’t mind. Every once in a while is was a good thing to be surrounded by so many people. She was pleased with her purchases so far, having found a delicious smelling box of extraordinary tea and a small hoard of polished crystal decorations. She was absorbed in her thoughts, running into a rushing body and promptly face planted. Her items flew in several different directions. Saffron sat up, thankful that her face hadn’t broken, and glared in the direction the rushing person had gone off in. Several concerned parties had already began to collect her strewn items and brought the back to her. She took them sheepishly. “Well that was graceful.” She mumbled to herself. Saffron dusted off her knees and rubbed her forehead, letting her eyes wonder around. They landed on a young man in the arcade, which she had landed in front of. He was absorbed in his game, seemingly content. He looked like he was enjoying himself. She looked the game up and down. It was something that’d she’d normally do. But what the heck? Why not? She collected her items and stepped into the arcade. The teen behind the register wasn’t surprised by an older person stepping in, helpfully stowed her items behind the counter, and changed a few dollar bills into quarters for her. Saffron looked around. Some of the games looked interesting. Her eyes darted back to the young man dancing. It seemed like so much fun, and it had been a while since she’d had fun. She took a breath and walked over to the game.

He was moving to the sound of a catchy Korean pop song. His score was moving higher and higher and no one seemed to really want to get shown up by him and his moves. That is until Saffron showed up! He'd glance over for only a moment, flashing her a warm smile. Silently welcoming her to join in if she wanted, but otherwise he kept his attention focused on the screen and the flashing arrows. He was aiming for a perfect score on this song.

The youth turned and smiled at her. It was a warm welcoming smile. She was amazed that he could look away from this game and not fall on his face, or at least not mess up. It crossed her mind that she had never done this before, and that it was entirely possible that she would make herself look like a fool. She took another deep breath and stepped onto the lit up pad on the floor. She fed the machine it’s quarter. It started up and she placed her feet in the starting position as the game instructed. It didn’t seem so hard. Until it started speeding up. She felt slightly ridiculous, keeping her elbows pinned to her sides, making her feet move in a way she never would have considered possible before to keep up with the arrows. She missed a couple, but not in a row, and not enough to make her loose.

He was content to dance and play in silence, letting the sounds of the arcade speak for the both of them. It allowed him to focus on the movements of his feet with the arrows as the song sped up to it's hardest part. He didn't dare look away, even with knowing what the arrows would be he wasn't confident enough to try and do this with his eyes closed or facing away. He hadn't practiced nearly enough for that yet. Unlike some of the top players he'd seen in the arcade.
Still, when the song finally ended he did manage to land his perfect, sending a wave of pride and relief through him. Mission accomplished. He'd look over to his fellow competitor with a huge grin. Feeling pretty darn good about himself.
"Hey, you did pretty well too. Up top!"
He'd hold out a hand for a high five! The sacred bond of all who came here. Surely she would now know that despite her age. She was so totally in.

She heard him finish his game, and knew that he had won it with a perfect score. Her game wasn’t finished, but she looked up, and her feet stopped moving. The game zeroed out with a sad digital noise as she lost.
But she did high five him.
“I’ve never done anything like this before in my life.” She told him. “That was really fun!” She laughed. “Even if I did loose.”

"Nah, you didn't lose. You aren't facing against me, you are challenging yourself."
They just happened to be playing next to each other. Everyone started somewhere, and he wasn't going to judge her based on where she began. Only if she was a quitter and if she was the type of person that tried to improve themselves.
"It just takes some practice. You'll totally get the hang of it."

Saffron was slightly confused. She had never been a very techno forward person and she had certainly never played a game like this before. Most of the games that she played involved lots of other people and some for of physical gaming pieces, like cards, or board games.
“I don’t understand. The machine told me that I made a mistake and that it was a game over. Doesn’t that mean that I lost?”

"Only cause you stopped moving before the song was over." He shrugged. "I guess that's my fault since I interrupted you. Next game is on me. Alright?" He'd dig out a quarter from his pocket and hold it out for her. Since she hadn't been done when he had gone to high five her. He'd clearly just gotten caught up in his own little world and the thrill of victory.

Saffron felt her cheeks get red. She felt kind of stupid.
“I feel so stupid. Electronic anything isn’t really my deal. But you made this look like it was a lot of fun, so I wanted to try it.”
She looked at the quarter he offered her for a moment too long, then gingerly took it from him and put it into the machine. She prayed he wasn’t going to stand there and watch her play as the game gave a musical jingle when it came back to life. Saffron focused very hard on the game, doing her best to get her feet in the right places. It seemed to a little easier this time.

"It is pretty fun. Just relax and don't worry about score at first."
He'd say with a small laugh as she took the quarter from him and put it into the machine. The good news was that he wasn't going to just stand there and watch her. Though he wasn't taking off either. He was just going to slide another quarter into the machine he was on next to her and he'd move with the music. Though he made it a point to pick a much lower difficulty so he didn't seem to be as intimidating. Though it meant that it was super easy for him, but that was fine. He just liked doing something to unwind sometimes.

Saffron was nervous about this. She kept on going though, and though the game kept going faster and faster, she was starting to have fun. Saffron started to become absorbed in the game, and though she didn’t notice it, her elbows had come unpinned from her sides and she actually kinda looked like she was really dancing now.

He didn't point out that she was loosening up, he was just gonna let her do her thing next to him. He was having fun, she seemed to be having fun. That's really all that mattered. Even if this mode was way to easy for him it allowed him to sneak a few peeks at her screen and watch her progress. Though he'd at least try to not be stupidly obvious about it and become a distraction himself. That would defeat the whole point.

Saffron began to enjoy herself, as she got better and better at the game. Before she new it, her score was actually singing something fairly decent. The time flew and before she knew it, it was very late and one employee was beginning to chase out kids as closing time was near.
“Oh dear, what time is it?” Saffron wondered aloud, looking at her watch. It was well past 9 at night. It was okay, because buses run all night, but the later it got the longer you had to wait for one at the bus stop. She was having fun, but she needed to get home and make sure that she got rest. After all, her shop opened at 6:30 in the morning, to catch the early commuters. With a bit of remorse, she stepped off the gaming pad and turned to walk to the counter to retrieve her things.
