The day was pleasant enough, the sun shining with a gentle breeze flowing through the city. It was the type of day that just seemed to be in a peaceful haze. People seemed to be smiling more, traffic seemed lighter than normal, and there was laughter and the singing voices of birds filling the air. Day's like these were treasures in their own right. Alex had even scored an early shift from work which was perfect because he needed to stock up on food for home. He didn't get a chance to shop terribly often so when he did he tried to make it count.
Alex, with his long sleeves and jeans was currently standing outside of one of the stalls of the local Farmer's market examining some of the vegetables that were for sale. The backpack on his back however was already bulging from whatever was in it, obviously stuffed and not at all light from the way the leather creaked and strained against it's contents. Though Alex hardly seemed to notice as he held up the onion, looking for imperfections.

Korra walked through the market, humming softly. Her mother had sent her out to get some groceries from the market. Just enough for a few days since her mom was going to a music convention. How she had convinced the private school she worked for to pay for it she will never know. Nonetheless it was up to her to feed herself while she was gone. And she needed ingredients for that. Adjusting the large cloth shopping bag on her shoulder, she wandered through the stalls, pick up meat and veggies along the way. It was when she reached the onion stand that she was having issues. She had always had a tough time determining which onions were good. She bit her lip as she examined the two possibilities. Noticing the person next to her she spoke up.
"Excuse me, but which onion do you think is in better shape? I have a terrible time figuring it out."

"Hmmm?"
He'd look over to Korra, his own onions having been deemed acceptable and lacking in soft spots or brown spots. So they should be good for several weeks to come still, which was perfect. And it would last him for a few weeks in all likelihood. After he paid for his onion's he'd shift his backpack to the front so he could place them inside along with the bulging bags of rice, noodles, and spices that he already had inside.
"That one."
He'd say pointing to the onion on the right. There are no signs of spotting and it looks firm. You gotta watch out for the soft spots because the mold quickly."

Korra smiled brightly at the stranger. The blond boy showed her not only which onion was correct but how to choose them in the future. It was a very sweet gesture. Many people would have just brushed her off or gruffly told her which one and scuffle off before she could thank them. It seemed luck was on her side today when she met him.
"Thank you. I have a terrible time choosing them. Mom was starting to think I was hopeless." she joked as she purchased her own onion and placed them in her bag. After readjusting the bag on her shoulder, she turned her attention back to the stranger. It would a shame if she didn't at least introduce herself and attempt to make a friend.
"My name is Korra, it is a pleasure to meet you."

"Nice to meet you as well. I'm Alex."
He'd take her hand with a firm calloused grip and shook it. A friendly smile dancing across his lips before he readjusted his back so it was securely on his back.
"Didn't do well in home Economics I'm guessing?"

Korra returned his handshake and chuckled softly.
"No, I'm afraid I've always been more into psychology and philosophy than home economics. My mom is constantly cracking jokes about what a terrible housewife I'd make."
Her eyes glanced down at his pack. It was full of different eatables that she had no idea how to use. He must adore cooking.
"You on the other hand must have aced home economics. How do you remember all the tips and tricks for everything?"

"Oh God no, I'm a terrible cook. That's why I just make rice and noodles."
Veggies were thrown in, but he was terrible at making anything complex. It was pretty much boil water, put stuff in water, and eat what came out. Sometimes it came out alright, but most of the time it was just because he made the same thing nearly every day. It was a boring food life, but it was sufficient.
"I think I'd rather think about the nature of morality rather than how to glaze vegetables anyways."
He could agree with her on the philosophy aspect at least. It was interesting to think about the world beyond their own lives. And just the nature of being. The nature of the self. Morality was part of it, but only part of it.

Korra laughed at his proclamation of being a terrible cook. At last, someone who was in the same boat she was when it came to cooking. Kindred spirits were hard to find it seemed. Especially when it came to the elusive art of failing at cooking.
"At least it's better than having fast food every night. I truly feel sorry for people who have to do that. It's not good for them."
When Alex mentioned he would prefer thinking about the nature of morality than how to glaze vegetables she couldn't agree more. She herself found it an eye opening experience when she studied philosophy. She could get lost in her thoughts for hours when she tried to contemplate her own place in the fabric of reality.
"I can't agree more. There's just too much to wonder about to get so absorbed in our own lives. It almost seems wasteful."

"Well you gotta do what you gotta do I suppose when you can't cook. Fast food beats starving to death."
Though that would get expensive pretty fast, and he didn't exactly have that kind of money. Sure he lived rent and utility free, but he didn't work that much. He preferred to keep most of his day open for other things. But that did mean certain sacrifices, like all things in life nothing came from nothing. Whether it was time, effort, money, or something else. Everything about life was finding a balance.
"It's pretty easy to get caught up in the day to day grind though, we live in a fast paced society. Most people don't have time to stop and think about things that don't concern their day to day life in an obvious way. Most people are concerned with meeting the basic needs for themselves and their family. There is no time or reason to think beyond that most of the time. I mean thinking about the grand scheme of the universe is wasted energy if you can't provide food for yourself or your family. Right?"

Korra nodded, conceding his point. It was easy to look down on others when she had enough. Life had hardships, some lives had more than others. That did not merit anyone looking down on then. Alex continued speaking as Korra shifted her bag on her shoulders.
"True enough. Philosophy can be a luxury at times. Though it does beg the question of how many people could afford that luxury if more of those born with it chose to partake a little more. Seeing beyond oneself could do a lot for society."
The brunette stopped her musings immediately when she realized how pretentious that sounded. She rubbed the back of her head sheepishly. For all her thoughts and wonders of the universe she really didn't know how to stop when ahead. Now she has stuck her foot in her mouth again in front of a cute stranger. Damn her luck.
"That sounded better in my head. I really should think twice before I speak."
